ポートランドの冬は雨期で、まるで日本の梅雨の様に何日もシトシトと雨が降り続きます。気温は華氏で40度（摂氏4度）前後、ひんやりとしていますが、北風小僧が吹きつける様な厳しさはありません。ただ、この雨期、11月ごろから始まって4月ごろまで続き、昼間もどんよりしていることが多いので、かなり鬱陶しいです。そのせいもあって、似た様な気候のシアトルと合わせ、パシフィックノースウェストではうつ病の患者さんが多いそうです。晴れの日も少ないので、ビタミンD欠乏症の患者さんも多く、赤ちゃんから年寄りまでビタミンDの処方箋をよく見ます。

Winter in Portland is the rainy season, and it rains for days on end just like the rainy season in Japan. The temperature is around 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4.5 degrees Celsius), moist and cool, but it is not as harsh as the North winter wind in Japan. However, this rainy season starts around November and lasts until April, and it’s often dull even during the day, so it’s quite annoying. Because of this, together with Seattle, which has a similar climate, there are many people with depression in the Pacific Northwest. Since there are few sunny days, there are many patients with vitamin D deficiency, too. I see lots of Vitamin D prescriptions for people of all ages from babies to elderly.

雪が降るのは年に数回で、降っても積もるか積もらないかといった程度です。東京や愛知県と変わらない量と頻度です。ただ、何年かに一度、ドカンと降ります（ポートランドにしてはね）。2月22日は午後から降り始めたにも関わらず、ポートランド空港では10.8インチ（27cm)の降雪量を記録し、史上2番目の大雪でした！第二次世界大戦後ではなんと記録史上1番！！！

It snows only a few times a year, and even if it does, it may or may not pile up. It’s the same amount and frequency as Tokyo and Aichi Prefecture. However, once every several years, we get tons (for us, Portlanders). On February 22nd, even though it started to fall in the afternoon, PDX recorded 10.8 inches (27cm) of snow, the second heaviest ever! And the most heaviest after World War II! ! !

翌日、次女は友達と雪遊び。「屋根なしカマクラ」を作ったり、ソリで遊んだり、満喫してました。でも、雪は楽しいことばかりでもないんだよね。（写真の下へ続く）

The next day, my second daughter played in the snow with her friends. They fully enjoyed making a “roofless igloo” and sledding. But snow day isn’t all about fun. (Continued below photo)

ポートランドの人たちは普段雪慣れしていないので、車はあちこちでスリップして事故を起こしたり、立ち往生したり、交通網は完全マヒでした。私は今回はラッキーなことに、この日はもともと仕事が休みだったので、特に渋滞に巻き込まれることもありませんでした。ただ、娘の体操の練習の時間が雪のために短縮されていたにも関わらず、留守番電話に気付いた時にはちょうど練習が終わっていて、慌てて迎えに行ったものの15分遅刻。ごめんよ、コーチと娘。

Portlanders are not used to snow, so cars slipped here and there, causing accidents, getting stuck, and the traffic network was completely paralyzed. Luckily, I already had the day off from work this time, so I didn’t get stuck in traffic. However, even though the time for my daughter’s gymnastics practice had been shortened due to the snow, she had just finished practicing when I noticed the phone message. I was 15 minutes late picking her up. Sorry, coach and my daughter.

私の同僚には5-6時間かけて家に帰った人もいます。私もそんなことあったよ、何年か前に。

It took 5-6 hours to get home for some of my colleagues. I had that experience, too, some years ago.

ここからは私の回顧録。。。その日は正午には雪が降り始めていたのに、夕方5時までクリニックを閉めてもらえなかったんですよ。。。仕事終わって駐車場についた時にはもう5cm以上雪が積もっていました。チェーンをつけるのも四苦八苦。チェーンが雪に埋もれるし、暗くて吹雪で視界が悪いし。ようやく運転して道路を走っていても、立ち往生している車があちこちに停車していたので、よけながら運転しないといけませんでした。高速道路では大きなトレーラーが斜めに壁に刺さっていて一車線しか通れません。さらに、高速道路も一般道もあちこち通行止めで、ぐるぐる運転できる道を探しながらたどり着いたのが、山道。チェーンをしているのになかなか登れなくて、エンジンが焼けるんじゃないかと心配しちゃいました。ようやく山を降りて住宅街を走っていたら、なんとスクールバスが走っているじゃないですか、たくさんの子供を乗せて夜の8時40分に！うちのすぐ近くの坂道にもスクールバスが乗り捨て。ようやく家にたどり着いたのは夜の9時でした。4時間かかりました。

From here is my memoir. . . Even though it started snowing at noon on that day, the clinic didn’t close until 5pm… By the time I got to the parking lot after work, more than 2 inches (5 cm) of snow had already piled up. Attaching a chain was also a struggle. The chain was buried in the snow, and it was dark and the blizzard made it difficult to see. Even when I was finally able to drive on the road, there were stranded cars here and there, so I had to dodge while driving. On I-84, there was a trailer truck stuck diagonally to the freeway wall, which made only one lane open. In addition, freeways and highways were closed here and there (of course, the Steel Bridge was closed, too), so I had to drive in circles to find the way home. Then, the only option left was SW Burnside-Miller Rd.-Cornell Rd. Even though I had chains on, my car struggled to climb up the hill and I was worried that my engine would burn. When I finally got off the mountain and was running through a residential area, I saw a school bus with many children at 8:40 pm! Another school bus was stuck on the slope near my house, too. I finally reached home at nine o’clock at night. It took me 4 hours to get home.

何年も経っているのに、雪が降るとこの時の記憶が鮮明に蘇り、最近では雪が積もりそうな日は仕事に行けません。PTSD (Posttraumatic Stress Disorder)ですね。雪は、暖かい飲み物でも飲みながら、家の中から眺めているのが一番ですね。

Although many years have passed, the memory of that time comes back vividly when it snows. I cannot go to work when the weather forecast shows snow accumulation. It’s PTSD (Posttraumatic Stress Disorder). Watching the snow from inside the house while sipping a warm drink is the best!
