4月に入ってからの19日間で雨が降らなかったのは、たったの2日。出かければ雨が降るから、私は雨女じゃなかろうかと疑い始めてました😅 でも、来週からは打って変わって晴天続きの予報。もう氷点下にもならなさそうだし、雨が降っているうちに雨水を貯めたいので、雨水タンクを裏庭に出しました（氷点下になると、貯まった水が凍ってタンクが膨張し割れる危険性がある）。

In the 19 days since the beginning of April, there were only two days without rain. Every time I went out, it rained on me, so I started to suspect that I might be cursed with rain😅 But from next week onward, the weather will change completely and sunny forecast. I don’t think it will get below freezing anymore this season and I want to collect water while it’s still raining, so I set up rain barrels in the backyard (when the temperature drops below freezing, the stored water freezes, causing the tank to
swell and may crack.).

昨年購入して始めた雨水タンク。自分で一から作ればすごく安上がりですが、さすがに大変。。。なので、すでに蛇口とホース口が取り付けられたものを購入しました。我が家のシステムは、二つの58ガロン（220L）タンクを直列に繋いだものです。屋根に降った雨水が雨どいに集まり下水に流れて行きますが、雨どいと下水を繋ぐパイプの途中から、その雨水をとっています。二つのタンクは上部でホースで繋がれており、一つ目のタンクがいっぱいになったら（ホースのつなぎ目まで水位が上がったら）、二つ目のタンクに水が流れるようになっています。両方のタンクがいっぱいになると、雨どいからパイプを流れてくる雨水はそのまま下水に落ちて行くような仕組みになっています。だからオーバーフローのホースは繋いでいません。タンクの上部には、三つ穴の空いたトレイとその上に網がつけられていて、蚊が入らないようになっています。ちなみにこのタンク、元はギリシャ産オリーブオイルの樽だったようです。

Rain Barrels that I bought last year. It would be very cheap to make one from scratch, but it would be too much work. . . So, I bought those with the spigot and hose attachment. My system is two 58 gallon (220L) barrels in series. Rainwater that fell on the roof is collected in the gutter and flows down in the downspout then goes into the sewer. My system gets rain from the connector in the downspout. The two barrels are connected at the top by a hose. When the first one is full (when the water level rises to the hose joint), water flows into the second one. When both barrels are full, the water goes straight down into the sewage system in the downspout. So I don’t have an overflow hose. At the top of the barrel is a tray with three holes and a mesh screen on top to keep out mosquitoes. By the way, this barrel seems to have originally been a barrel of Greek olive oil.

実は二つのタンク、全く同じに見えて実は高さが違います。去年は何も考えずに繋げて失敗しました。3cmくらいの差ですが、低い方を二つ目にしてしまい、上から水が溢れてしまいました。パイプの中のオーバーフローの仕掛けの平衡水位よりちょっとだけ低かったみたい。気づいた時にはもちろん水が満タンに入っていてどうしようもない状態。というか、水を抜いてやり直す気にはならなかったので、１シーズンそのまま強行突破。今年は板を敷いて底上げしました。うまくいくといいな。

In fact, the two barrels look exactly the same, but the height is actually different. Last year, I made a mistake by connecting them without thinking. The difference is about a little over 1 inch, but I made the lower barrel the second one, so the water overflowed from the top. It looks like the top of the rim was just a little lower than the equilibrium water level of the connector in the downspout. By the time I noticed it, of course the water was full and I couldn’t do anything about it. Or rather, I didn’t feel like draining all the water and starting over, so I just pushed through the first season. This year, I laid boards to raise the ground. I hope it works.

「もういい加減、雨止んでくれ〜〜」と思っていたのに、雨水タンクを設置した途端、「雨降らないかな」と期待してしまう。現金な私です。
