ここ数年、モグラがうちの庭を荒らしまくってます。14年前に新築で家を買った時のうちの庭は、ブルドーザーで固めた砂利混じりの粘土質の土の上に、ほんの少し庭用の土がのせられ、その上に芝生と数本の庭木が植えられていました。多分ミミズもモグラも住めないような土だったと思います。そこに、土を掘って堆肥や腐葉土を混ぜて、桜や椿、色々な果物の苗を植えました。芝生も、メッシュのスクリーンで石ころや木の枝などの大きめのものを取り除いた堆肥を、毎年のように施していました。その甲斐あって、土中のミミズの数も順調に増え、10年たったころに、モグラがどこからともなくやって来ました。そうです、モグラさん、ミミズが大好物らしいです。土が改善されたことは大いによろしきことなのですが、モグラの被害はやっぱり困る。芝生のデコボコは、毎回足で踏み潰さないと芝刈りもできないし、野菜の近くを掘られるとやっぱり育ちにくい。

Over the last several years, moles have been ravaging our garden. When I bought a new house 14 years ago, the backyard had lawn and a few garden trees planted in a little garden soil on top of clay mixed with gravel that had been bulldozed. I think the soil was probably inhospitable to earthworms and moles. I dug up the soil, mixed with compost and leaf mold to plant cherry blossoms, camellias, and various fruit seedlings. The lawn was also top-dressed with screened compost almost every year. As a result, the number of earthworms in the soil increased steadily, and after 10 years, moles appeared out of nowhere. That’s right, Mr. Mole seems to love earthworms. It is great that the soil has improved, but the damage caused by moles is a real problem. You can’t mow the uneven lawn unless you trample it down with your feet first. Also, the veggies don’t grow well if they burrow nearby.

ということで、（一人）対策会議です。

So, it’s time for a (one person) countermeasures meeting.

まず、モグラが何を食べるかというと、20％植物、80％虫です。ミミズはいくらでも増えるし、害虫はいくら食べられても気にしません。が、植物は困る。植物は、チューリップ、ユリ、アヤメ、ジャガイモ、人参、豆類などを食べます。うちのチューリップも全て食べられてしまいました😢 今年植えたエンドウも半分以上食べられてしまったと思います。

First of all, what moles eat is 20% plants and 80% insects. Earthworms multiply forever and I don’t care how much they eat unwanted insects. But I care about my plants. Plants eaten are tulips, lilies, irises, potatoes, carrots and legumes. All my tulips have been gone😢 I think more than half of the peas I planted this year have been eaten.

4番はガーデニングが趣味の私には無理。3番も、食べ物を育てているので❌。環境にも悪いですし。。。ということで、まず2番を試してみました。最初に、モグラが苦手な匂いのするガーリックと、食べれば毒の水仙を植えました。モグラ殿、平気ですぐ横を通って参られました。ガーリックは、ポイっと投げられてたこともあります😡 コーヒーの匂いも嫌いらしいので、仕事場から持って帰って来た出がらしをモグラトンネルに入れましたが、効いてない。。。

やっぱり、罠を仕掛けるしかないのかぁ。ということで、試してみました。

I can’t do number 4 because gardening is my hobby. Number 3 is also ❌ since I am growing food. It is also bad for the environment…. So I tried the second option first. First, I planted garlic that moles don’t like the smell and daffodils which are poisonous if eaten. Mr. Mole just walked past them without any hesitation. Garlic has been tossed once😡 They say moles don’t like the smell of coffee too, so I put the used coffee grounds I brought back from work in the mole tunnel. But it didn’t work either. . .

After all, I have no choice but to set a trap. So, I tried.

一つ目は、よくあるハサミ型の罠。真ん中の金属片にモグラが触れれば、ハサミが閉まりモグラを挟み込む仕組みです。ちょっと設置するのが面倒。穴掘って、モグラの通り道と平行に置いて、光を遮断。罠の真ん中の土はちょうど金属片に触れるように盛って固めなければいけません。バネの力が強く、設置するのがちょっと怖い。

二つ目は、 ストラップ型の罠。三つの金属ストラップの真ん中にプローブが付いてます。これにモグラが触れると、金属ストラップがプラスチックパイプに引き込まれ、モグラが挟まる仕組み。穴を掘らなくても設置できるので楽チンです。

The first is a common scissor-jaw mole trap. When the mole touches the metal piece in the middle, the scissors close and pinch the mole. A little troublesome to set up. You have to dig a hole and place it parallel to the mole path. Then, cover with soil or bucket to block light. The soil in the middle of the trap should be heaped up so that it just touches the piece of metal. The force of the spring is strong, so it is a little scary to install.

The second is a strap-type trap. A probe is attached in the middle of three metal straps. When the mole touches the probe, the metal straps are pulled into the plastic pipe, trapping the mole. Easy to install without digging a hole.

ハサミ型を設置して5日、ストラップ型を設置して3日。かかりません。。。根気よく正しい設置の仕方を学んでいかなければならないようです。。。

5 days after setting the scissor-jaw trap and 3 days after setting the strap trap. No mole captured. . . It seems that I have to learn how to set it correctly with patience. . .
