〜今日は洗濯日和☀️　Today is a good day for laundry☀️〜

人によっては当たり前にしていることですが、衣類乾燥機を使わずに洗濯物を干すことで、電気代の節約になります。アメリカではアパートでも衣類乾燥機がついているところが多いです。私も衣類乾燥機のある生活にすっかり慣れてしまっていました。もともと、省エネ生活には興味があったのですが、たまたま同僚で洗濯物を干している人がいたことと、離婚して洗濯の回数と量が減ったこともあって、4年ほど前に洗濯物を干す生活に戻しました。日本にいた時は衣類乾燥機を持っていなかったので、昔やってたことをまたやり始めただけのことです。

Some people do it regularly, but hanging dry your laundry instead of using a clothes dryer saves money on your electricity bill. In the US, lots of apartments even have dryers. I was completely accustomed to living with a dryer. I was already interested in an energy-saving lifestyle, but I had a co-worker who hangs dry her laundry and I had less laundry after divorce, I returned to the life of hang dry four years ago. I didn’t have a dryer when I was in Japan, so I just started doing what I used to do.

うちの娘ども、洗濯物の干し方すら知りませんでした😱そりゃ、そうか。教えたことなかったからねぇ。もしかしてもしかすると、多くのアメリカ人は洗濯物を干したことがない？？？娘たちは4年経ってめでたく、そこそこ洗濯物干しができるようになりました。ちなみに、私の小学生の時の夏休みのお手伝いは毎年、洗濯物の脱水（昔は洗濯槽と脱水槽が別だった）と洗濯物干しでした。そうすると、母が洗濯機を回した後、すぐに仕事に行けたんですね♬

My daughters didn’t even know how to hang dry laundry😱 No wonder. Because I never taught them how. Is it possible that many Americans
have never hung dry their laundry? ? ? After four years, my daughters are now able to hang their laundry reasonably well. By the way, when I was in elementary school, my summer chores were to spin the laundry (in the old days, the washing tub and the spin tub were separate) and hang dry. That way, after my mother turned on the washing machine, she was able to go to work right away♬

とりあえず、どれだけ電気代が節約できるか、計算してみました。

• 我が家の衣類乾燥機の消費電力：5300W=5.3kW
• 乾燥するのにかかる時間：45分=0.75時間
• 衣類乾燥機を作動させるための電力：0.23kwh
• kWhあたりの電気代：12.674¢
• 衣類乾燥機を一回使うのにかかるコスト：(5.3×0.75+0.23)x12.674=53.29¢
• 1週間の洗濯の回数：2-3回
• ひと月の洗濯の回数：2.5×4=10回
• ひと月の衣類乾燥機の電気代：10x$0.5329=$5.33

Well, I calculated how much I could save the electricity bill.

• Dryer wattage of my dryer: 5300W=5.3kW
• Time to dry: 45 minutes = 0.75 hours
• Power to operate clothes dryer: 0.23kwh
• Electricity cost per kWh: 12.674¢
• Cost per load: (5.3×0.75+0.23)x12.674=53.29¢
• Number of washings per week: 2-3 times
• Number of washings per month: 2.5×4=10 times
• Electricity cost for a clothes dryer for a month: 10x$0.5329=$5.33

これを、たったの5ドルと取るか、チリも積もればと取るか。私的には正直、労力の割には大して節約できてないなぁ、って感じです。でも、他にも利点があるので続けます。

Are you going to take this as “just $5” or “many a little makes a mickle”. To be honest, I feel that I haven’t been able to save much money for the effort. But I will continue because there are other benefits.

洗濯物を干すことの利点（電気代節約以外）

• 天気のいい日に外に干すと、日光消毒できる。
• 家の中に干すと、湿気をもたらしてくれる。これがすごく重要。うちにはアトピっ子がいるので、湿度が40％切ると痒々です。そして、ピアノがあるのでやっぱり湿度を40ー60％に保たないといけません。春と秋は洗濯物を家の中に干すことで、ちょうどいい湿度になります。冬は残念ながら加湿器を使わないといけませんが、それでも助かってます。加湿器なしだと20％くらいまで湿度が下がりますので。
• 洗濯物が傷みにくい。また、縮みにくい。

Benefits of hang dry (other than saving money on electricity bill)

• Disinfect the clothes by drying them under the sun
• Hang dry inside the house will bring moisture. This is very important. I have a child with eczema, so she gets itchy when the humidity drops below 40%. And since we have a piano, we have to keep the humidity between 40-60%. In spring and autumn, I can hang my laundry indoors to keep the humidity just right. In winter, unfortunately I still have to use a humidifier, but it still helps. Without a humidifier, humidity will drop down to 20%.
• The clothes don’t get damaged much. Also, they do not shrink.

衣類乾燥機の利点（ま、書かなくてもいいんだけど）

• 干す場所を取らない。
• 短時間で乾く。
• 洗濯物を洗濯機から乾燥機に移すだけだから、洗濯物を干すほど時間がかからない。
• タオルなどがゴワゴワにならない。
• 風が吹いて洗濯物が倒れたり飛んで行ったりしない。

Benefits of Dryer (Well, I don’t have to write this)

• Doesn’t take up space to dry.
• Dries in a short time.
• It doesn’t take much time compared to hang dry since it’s just moving the laundry from the washing machine to the dryer.
• Towels do not become stiff.
• The laundry does not fall down or fly away by the wind.

一回に4.2kWhの節約なんだけど、アメリカの人がみんなやったらすごい節約になるんだろうなぁ。3億3千万人いて、衣類乾燥機の普及率は67％。そうすると一回スキップするだけで9億kWhの節約になるんだね。数の魔法🎩

It saves 4.2 kWh per load, but if all Americans did it, it would be a huge savings. There are 330 million people, and the prevalence of clothes dryers is 67%. Then, just by skipping one load, 900 million kWh would be saved. Magic of numbers🎩
