雑草取りってめんどくさい。3年前までは春になったら毎週のように雑草取りしないといけなくて、取っても取っても生えてきてました。どこからこんなに雑草のタネが飛んでくるのー。っていうくらい。うちの裏庭の外に湿原があって、売るほど雑草生えてるんですね。だから、しょうがないんですけど。

Weeding is cumbersome. Until three years ago, when spring came, I had to weed every week. No matter how much I pulled, it grew again. Where do so many weed seeds come from? There’s a wetland behind my backyard, and there’s so much weeds. That’s why.

それまでは雑草対策兼保湿にバークマルチといって、樹皮を細かくしたものを使ってました。見栄えもいいし、敷いた直後は雑草が生えてこないんですが、一年もすると分解されてしまって、また買ってきて敷かないといけない。一袋5−10ドルするものを6-8袋必要なので、結構お金もかかる。

Until then, I was using bark mulch to control weeds and keep moisture. It looks great and weeds don’t grow right after it’s spread, but it breaks down quickly in a year and I have to buy it again. I needed 6-8 bags (5-10 dollars per bag), so it was quite expensive.

というわけで、2年前に見つけた代替品がウッドチップ。ある時、当時の仕事場の近所にウッドチップの大きな山がいくつかあって、そのあたりの家庭の前庭に敷かれていました。「ほう！これはいい。」と思っていたら、ある日前庭で作業しているおうちの方がいらしたので、どこで調達したのか聞いてみました。「ChipDropよ。タダなんだけど、寄付したら早く持ってきてもらえるわよ。」

So, the alternative I found two years ago is wood chips. One day, I found some big piles of wood chips by the curb near my previous work place and wood chips was spread in the front yards of the houses there. I was thinking, “Whoa, this is good.” Then one day, someone was working in the front yard, so I asked her where she got it. “It’s from ChipDrop. It’s free, but if you donate, you’ll get it faster.”

ChipDrop。聞いたことがなかったので、家に帰って早速調べてみました。ウッドチップを供給しているサービスではなくて、仲介業者でした（リンクはここ）。Arborist（樹木の剪定業者）は普通はお金を払って、剪定したり伐採した木を処分するのですが、この仲介業者を通すことで安く、ウッドチップや丸太が欲しい一般人に提供することができます。樹木剪定業者が仲介業者に手数料を払っているので、ウッドチップを受け取る一般人側には無料のサービスです。ただ、業者に寄付をすることで優先してウッドチップを受け取ることができます。季節にもよるでしょうが、私は3月末に頼んだのですが、その日のうちに受け取ることができました。こんなサービスが成り立つところがポートランドっぽい！（ポートランドは木が多いことで有名。オレゴンの車のナンバープレートも米松（ダグラスファー）。）

ChipDrop. I had never heard of it, so I did some research as soon as I got home. It was not a service supplying wood chips, but an intermediary (link here). Arborists usually have to pay to dispose of the trees they pruned or felled, but by going through ChipDrop, they are able to provide wood chips and logs to the general public at a lower cost. The service is free to the general public receiving the wood chips, as arborists pay fees to ChipDrop. However, you get priority to receive wood chips by donating to the arborist. Although it depends on the season, I ordered it at the end of March and received it on the same day. It is so Portland that this kind of service works out well! (Portland is famous for its many trees. Oregon’s license plate is also Douglas fir.)

タダで（寄付したにしても破格の安さで）ウッドチップをいただけるわけですが、誰にでも適したサービスではありません。ここの仲介業者のホームページにも細かく注意点が書いてありますが、二つだけ取り上げると、

• 量が選べない。トラック一台分かもしれないし、ほんのちょっとかもしれない。うちの場合はトラック一台分きて、ガレージの前のドライブウェイの3分の2が埋まるほどでした😳
• 細長い枝や松葉が混じっている。当時は細長い枝の使い道がなかったので、庭のゴミとしてゴミ収集に出しました。

大量に運ばれてきてうちだけでは使い切れなかったので、隣人と分け合いました。こんなところで隣人と繋がれるのも面白いですね。

You can get wood chips for free (even if you donate them, at a bargain price), but it’s not a service for everyone. There are detailed warnings on their website, but I list two here.

• You can’t choose how much you get. It could be a truckload, or it could be just a little bit. In my case, it was a truckload and filled two-thirds of my driveway😳
• Long sticks and pine needles are mixed. At that time, there was no use for the long sticks, so I put them out for garbage collection as yard waste.

It was brought in so much that I couldn’t use it all by myself, so I shared it with my neighbors. It’s interesting to be able to connect with neighbors on a matter like this.

そんなこんなで、ウッドチップを敷き詰めた我が家の庭は、雑草が90％減少！1年目は雑草取りなし。2年目は一ヶ月に一回のペース。3年目の今年は、少しマルチが薄くなった場所があって雑草が生えてきていても、2週間に一回の雑草取りですんでます。ウッドチップは本当におすすめ！

In such a way, weeds have decreased by 90% in my garden with wood chips! No weeding in the first year. In the second year, it was once a month. This year, the third year, there are places where the mulch is a little thin and weeds are growing, but weeding is done once every two weeks. Wood chips are highly recommended!
