ブルーベリーの生産量はアメリカが世界一。その中でも、オレゴン州はワシントン州に次いでブルーベリーの生産量が多いです。つまりアメリカで第二位。ブルーベリーを育てるのにいい気候なのでしょう。大した世話をしなくても、毎年たくさんの実をつけてくれます。私が住んでいるポートランド周辺にはブルーベリーのU-Pick農場（自分で収穫して、収穫量に応じてお金を払う）もたくさんありますが、やっぱりうちで取れるブルーベリーが一番。オーガニックで安心だし、完熟で収穫すると本当に美味しい！

The United States is the number one producer of blueberries in the world. Oregon is the second largest blueberry producer after Washington. So, Oregon is number two in America. The climate is great for growing blueberries. Even if you don’t take care of it much, your blueberry will produce a lot of fruits every year. Around Portland, where I live, there are lots of U-Pick blueberry farms (you pick fruits yourself, then weigh and pay), but home grown blueberries are the best. It’s organic and safe, and it’s really delicious when you harvest it fully ripe!

でも、ブルーベリーが大好きなのは人間だけじゃないんです。そう、鳥さんたちも大大だーい好き。ほっておくと、鳥8割、人間2割の割り当てになってしまいます。

But humans aren’t the only ones who love blueberries. Yes, birds love them too. If you leave it alone, it will be an allocation of 80% birds and 20% humans.

ということで、今年もブルーベリーに網をかける時期がやってまいりました。手順を説明します。なんだか写真がイマイチわかりにくくてすみません。背景が全て緑なので、ブルーベリーがどこにあるかすらわからない。。。

So, it’s time to put a net over blueberries again this year. I will explain the procedure. I’m sorry that the pictures are kind of hard to see. You can’t even tell where the blueberries are because the background is all green….

1．PVCパイプを準備。PVCパイプはホームデポで購入。12フィート（3.6 m）で売られているのを半分に切ってもらいました。3フィート（90cm）のは自分でカッターで切りましたが、お勧めしません（切るの大変でした😭）。3方コネクターで接続します。

1. Prepare the PVC pipe. I bought PVC pipe from Home Depot. Sold at 12 feet (3.6 m), I had it cut in half. I cut the 3ft (90cm) ones myself with a box cutter, but I do not recommended it (it was really hard to cut😭). Connect with a 3-way connector.

2．PVCパイプの組み立て。ブルーベリーは水はけの良い土を好むので、スロープに植えてあります。なので、奥側の地面の低い方には、プラスッチックの鉢をひっくり返したものを台にしてその上にパイプをのせ、手前側と大体同じ高さになるようにしてます。我が家には二つのブルーベリーがあります。左側はSunshine Blueで右側はBlue Crop。Sunshine Blueは小さめで幅が広く3フィート（90cm）くらいの背丈。Blue Cropは幅が狭くて6フィート（1.8m）と背が高い。

2. Assemble PVC pipes. Blueberries prefer well-drained soil, so they are planted on slopes. So, on the lower side of the ground on the far side, I placed upside-down plastic pots as a stand for the pipes to make it roughly the same height as the front side. I have two blueberries at home. Sunshine Blue on the left and Blue Crop on the right. Sunshine Blue is short and wide about 3 feet (90cm) tall. Blue Crop is narrow and tall at 6ft (1.8m)

3．実の重みで垂れ下がった枝を麻のより糸でパイプに誘導し、枠の中に入るようにする。

3. The branches that hang down under the weight of the fruit are guided to the pipe with twine so that they are inside of the frame.

4．左側、網をはる場所に緑のテープを渡す。二つのブルーベリーの真ん中にあるアロニアが大きくなりすぎて、Sunshine Blueの方は網が枠に沿ってはれない。。。しょうがないので、真ん中から右側は斜めにはる（緑のテープに沿ってない）。

4. On the left side, place the green tape where the net will be put. The aronia in the middle of the two blueberries has grown so large that a net can’t be placed along the frame around Sunshine Blue. . . With that reason,
the net was placed diagonally on the right half (It’s not placed along the green tape).

5．網をはる。これが一番大変。いつも、網をはる途中でブルーベリーの実を引っ掛けてしまう。このロスが悔しい。

5. Place a net. This is the hardest. I always end up wasting some blueberries while I’m placing the net. This loss is frustrating.

6．網と地面の間に隙間がないようにする。これがとっても重要。隙間があると鳥が下から入ってくる。毎年、頑張って隙間を埋めてるんだけど、1-2羽は入って来てしまう。鳥を網から出すのが大変だからやめてほしいんだけど。ステープル（ホッチキスの芯みたいな形のいろいろなものを留めるガーデニング用具）を切らしたので、石とウッドチップで隙間を埋める。

6. Make sure there is no gap between the net and the ground. This is very important. If there is a gap, birds enter from below. Every year, I try my best to fill in the gaps, but one or two still come in. It’s hard to get the birds out of the net, so I’d like you to stop doing that, birdie. I ran out of staples (gardening tools that hold things together like staples), so I filled in the gaps with stones and wood chips.
