The hügelkultur series vol.2 is “the first hügel bed construction“.

I made two hügel beds last year, but I’ll introduce the first one first. The base of the hügel bed is logs. I couldn’t find anything like that at the store of course, so I wondered where to get it, and finally found it in “Facebook Marketplace”. Portland is naturally full of trees, and the backyards of single-family homes are no exception. There are many people who are looking for someone to take the trees that have been cut down for some reason, because either arborists refuse to haul them, or they have to pay extra fee to get rid of them. I happened to have found a post about 4 pine logs that were just the right size at a 5-minute drive from my house, so I decided to take it.

Prepared before bringing in logs. Removed and cleared the turf where the hügel bed would be made. Then laid out some cardboard.

On the day I received the logs, I put down the back seat of the car, put the cardboard in, put my eldest daughter in the passenger seat, and went to pick them up. But I didn’t know the log was that heavy! My eldest daughter
(who is a gymnast and strong) and I were exhausted when we carried two lighter ones into the car. It was impossible for two of us to lift the two
heavier ones…. We went home anyway and took the first two to our backyard. At a loss, I sent a message to the owner of the logs. “I’m sorry, but the other two are too heavy to carry. If you can help me, I can take them, but if not, I’ll have to give up.” The owner replied to me right away with yes. He looked like an ordinary American, but was very strong and carried them to the front of the car by himself. After that, three of us managed to put them in my car and drove them to my house.

Well, I had to carry that logs to the backyard with my eldest daughter. We couldn’t carry them around by holding end to end, so I decided to use my brain again. . . In the end, the log was kept upright (when it was removed from the car, it was naturally vertical), and while rotating it (in the direction of the axis of the piece), one person pushed like a sumo wrestler’s push and the other pulled and moved them to the backyard (Don’t imagine me doing! It’s a bit embarrassing).

Next, I filled the space with cut down birch branches and trunks which were
given to us by a person two houses down the street, half-finished compost, leaves and straw. Then, laid the overturned lawn on the outside of the hügel bed. And the first tier was completed.

I needed more thick tree branches. I found them 2 minute walk from my house. A huge oak tree fell two years ago. Some of the branches seemed to have been cleaned up by a contractor, but there were still some. I collected the picked branches in the immediate vicinity of where the car can be parked. I carried them into the car and drove home. After carrying them to the backyard, I arranged them on the first tier so that there is as little space as possible.

It rained a lot that year, and since I didn’t mulch at first, the compost was washed away😢 After that, I mulched the bed with thatch from the lawn. Apparently, Mr. Worms liked the thatch mulch, and there were a lot of them under the mulch. But American Robins found them and started lifting the thatch. In order to counter this, I had to put a net on the thatch.

There was an instance that a mole got into the hügel bed, but it’s going well this year as well as last year. Well-rooted crops grew incredibly large.
