二つ目のヒューゲル床は揚床花壇（レイズドベッド）の中に作ることにしました。見た目は全然違いますが（全然いい！）、中身はあまり変わりません。丸太、枝、ひっくり返した芝生、コンポストなどです。今回も丸太はフェイスブックマーケットプレイスで調達。ポートランド南東のお宅の、大きくなりすぎて切られた木蓮を無料でいただきました。

The hügelkultur series vol.3 is “the second hügel bed construction“.

I decided to make the second hügel bed in a raised bed. They look very different (it looks much better!), but they’re not much different on the inside. Logs, branches, overturned grass, compost, etc. I got logs on Facebook Marketplace again this time. I received a free overgrown and cut magnolia in southeast Portland.

先ずは、揚床花壇を作ります。庭がスロープになっているため、2段にすることにしました。もともとあった隣のうちとの間のコンクリートの壁を一面とし、半円形の揚床花壇を二つ作りました。

1. 土を平らにする。
2. 溝を掘り、砂利を入れる。
3. 砂利を平らにする。

First, make raised beds. Since the garden is sloped, I decided to make it two-tiered. Using the concrete wall between my yard and my neighbor’s yard as one wall, I made two semi-circular raised beds.

1. Level the soil.
2. Dig a trench and fill it with gravel.
3. Flatten the gravel.

4. 二つ目の土台も完成。中にいただいてきた木蓮の丸太を入れる。壊れた揚床花壇の枠😢も入れる。

4. The second base is complete, too. Magnolia logs were put inside. Also I put broken frames😢 of my old raised beds inside.

5. コツコツとブロック（一個10kgくらい💦）を重ねていく。一つ置くごとに隣のブロックと高さを合わせ、水準器で水平にする。
6. 一番上の段は違う形のブロックで、コンクリ用の接着剤でくっつける。

5. Step by step, the blocks (about 10 kg each💦) are stacked up. Each time I place one, match the height with the adjacent block and level it with a level.
6. The top row is different shaped blocks (cap stones) that are glued together with concrete glue.

中に枝や草、ひっくり返した芝生、コンポストを入れて完成💗

Complete with branches, grass, upturned lawn and compost inside💗

3月に植えたいちごとSunshine Daisy Bush、4月に植えた小松菜とからし菜が大きくなってきました。

The strawberries and Sunshine Daisy Bush I planted in March, and the Komatsu-na (Asian Green) and mustard greens I planted in April
are growing.

さらに、とうもろこしを植え、一ヶ月もすると、いろいろな植物がひしめきあいながらも、元気に育ってます。

In addition, corn was planted, and within a month everything was growing well, even though various plants were crowded together.

1年経った今でも、この揚床花壇は壊れずに立ってます（コンクリだし〜）。今までの揚床花壇と違うところは、2年目のいちごが去年よりも元気いっぱいなところ。今までは、年々弱っていってましたから。でも、ヒューゲル床はまだ養分いっぱい詰まってます。長いこと頑張ってもらいたいですね。

Even after a year, this raised bed is still standing (it’s concrete〜). The difference from the old raised beds I had is that the strawberries in the second year are more energetic than last year. Plants were getting weaker each year before. But, the hügel beds still have lots of nutrients. I hope this new raised beds will last for a long time.
