人生初スイカ採れました。でも、小さいし（10cm）開花後も熟すまで時間がかかりました。スイカの難しいところ。
I harvested a watermelon for the first time in my life. However, it was small (4 inches) and took a long time to ripen after flowering. What was hard about growing watermelon.
発芽：温度が高くないと発芽しない。熱帯アフリカ原産ですから。うちにそれが可能な器具がないので、「ポケット発芽」をしました。湿らせたキッチンペーパーに包んでチャック付きのビニール袋に入れて、ズボンのポケットに入れておきます。すると3-5日で発芽します。そのあとは家の中である程度大きくなるまで苗を栽培します。
Germination: Seeds will not germinate unless the temperature is high. Because watermelon is native to tropical Africa. I don’t have the equipment to germinate watermelon, so I did “pocket germination”. Wrap it in damp kitchen paper, put it in a zippered plastic bag, and put it in your pants pocket. The seeds will then germinate in 3-5 days. After that, grow the seedlings inside until they become bigger.
夏：ポートランドの夏は人間にはいい気候ですが、スイカにはちょっと物足りないです。生育適温は摂氏25ー30度。夜間も18ー20度必要とし、15度以下では生育不良とのこと。ポートランドでは、8月でも半分以上15度未満でした。しかもすでに秋模様。まだ3個あるんですが、あまり期待できません。
Summer: Portland’s summer weather is good for humans, but it’s a bit unsatisfying for watermelons. Suitable temperature to grow watermelon is
75-86 degrees Fahrenheit. It requires a night temperature of 64-68 degrees, and growth is poor at temperatures below 60 degrees. In August, more than half of the nights were below 15 degrees here in Portland. And it’s already looking like autumn. I still have 3 watermelons left on the vine, but I can’t expect much.
ということで、来年以降はスイカは栽培しないでしょう。
So, I won’t be growing watermelons after next year.
9月13日更新：スイカを切って食べてみました。小さくてもしっかりスイカの味がして美味しかった。しかも熟れてた！
Update on Sep. 13, 2023: I cut the watermelon and ate it. It was small but the taste was real watermelon’s. It was ripe, too!
