マスターリサイクラーのクラスが始まりました。毎週水曜日午後6時から9時までを7回と土曜日午前8時から12時半までを2回の、合計9回30時間です。その後にボランティア活動を30時間終了後、「マスターリサイクラー」の称号がもらえます。

The Master Recycler class has begun. Seven classes every Wednesday from 6:00pm to 9:00pm and 2 Saturdays from 8:00am to 12:30pm, for a total of 9 sessions (30 hours). Afterwards, complete 30 hours of volunteer work, then you will receive the title of “Master Recycler”.

最初のクラスが始まる前にデジタルで渡されたのが、マスターリサイクラープログラムのハンドブック（写真上）。クラスの前に読んでくるように言われた4つの章は結構時間がかかった。英語は未だに読んで読解するのに時間がかかる。日本語のようにスラスラ頭に入ってこない。大学時代に言われたことを思い出す。日本語の論文を英訳すると1.5-2倍のページ数になるとか。今回は42ページだったので、日本語だったらA4で21−28ページ程度か。

Before the first class began, students were given a digital copy of the Master Recycler Program handbook (pictured above). Four chapters, which I was asked to read before class, took quite a while. It still takes time to read and understand in English for me. It doesn’t sink into my head as easily as Japanese. I remember something I was told when I was in college. When a Japanese (academic) paper is translated into English, it takes 1.5-2 times as many pages. Now it was 42 pages, so if it was in Japanese, it would be about 21-28 pages on A4 paper.

初日には同じものをバインダーに入れて渡されたが、1.5インチ（4センチ）バインダーにぎっしり紙が詰まっている。このプログラムは三ヶ月かかるプログラムを半分の7週間でやる感じだなぁ。学生に戻った気分だが、楽しみもある。3回の社会見学だ。リサイクル工場やリサイクル仕分け場、堆肥工場や再利用ショップなどを回る。コロナ禍で授業料が安くなっていた時にオレゴン州立大学のリサイクル101を取っていたので、ついていけるとは思うけど、気を抜くと読み物が終わらなさそう。。。あと6週間頑張らなきゃ💦

On the first day, we were given the same item in a binder. The binder was 1.5 inches (4 cm) and full of papers. This program is like doing a program that would take three months in half, in seven weeks. Hey. I feel like I’m a student again. But I’m also looking forward to something. Three field trips. We will visit recycling company, garbage transfer station, compost company, reuse shops, etc. I took Recycling 101 at Oregon State University when tuition was cheaper due to the COVID pandemic, so I think I’ll be able to keep up, but if I let my guard down, I’d have a hard time catching up with reading. . . I have to work hard for the next 6 weeks💦

なぜこのプラグラムを取ることにしたかというと、、、隣人はリサイクルにとても関心の高いご夫婦。いつも妻のジェンと私で、自治体のリサイクルカートに入れられないものをイベントに持って行く。量もあるし、形態やプラスチック番号ごとに分けたり四苦八苦（日本のゴミ分別もこんな感じ？）。東大卒とマサチューセッツ工科大卒の才女二人でなんでこんなに苦労してんのよ！（それとも私たちってやっぱり勉強バカ？？？）絶対システムが間違ってる！ってことで、ワシントン郡では一年に一回しかないプログラムのスケジュールと私のスケジュールがマッチしたので、勉強することにしました（勉強バカなので勉強で問題解決します）。

The reason why I decided to take this program…. is because my neighbor is a married couple who are very interested in recycling. The wife, Jen, and I always take items to events for things that can’t be put in the curbside recycling cart. There’s a lot, and it’s a pain to sort it by type and plastic number (Is this how garbage is sorted in Japan maybe?). Why are two talented women, one graduated from the University of Tokyo and the other from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, going through so much trouble? (Or are we just study idiots???) The system is definitely wrong! So, since my schedule matched the schedule of the program that only takes place once a year in Washington County, I decided to study (Since I am study idiot, I solve a problem by studying.)
