世の中知らない方が良かったと思うことがたくさんあるわけですが、私は何を隠そう、そういうことを知るのが好きです。だから、ドキュメンタリー映画を見るのが大好き❣️最近はジャーナリズムでも勉強しようかと思い始めちゃいました（これ以上、手を出すな、我!）😅

There are many things in this world that you wish you didn’t know about, but to tell you the truth, I like to know those things. That’s why I love watching documentary movies❣️Recently, I’m starting to think about studying journalism (Don’t start more new things, Chiezo!) 😅

この映画は、エクアドルのアマゾン森林に住む原住民がアメリカ大手石油会社シェブロンを相手に起こした訴訟を追ったドキュメンタリー。シェブロンは何の布告もなく、原住民の住む森で木を切り倒し、穴を掘り石油ビジネスを始める。流れ出た原油や産業廃棄物であたりの環境は汚染され、人々は病気に冒され始める。シェブロン側はあの手この手を使って訴訟を長引かせビジネスの継続をはかる。原住民、被告原告両側の弁護士、シェブロン社員へのインタビューを含む重厚なドキュメンタリーである。

This film is a documentary that follows a lawsuit filed by indigenous people living in the Amazon forest in Ecuador against the American giant oil company Chevron. Without any notice to them, Chevron starts an oil business by cutting down trees and digging holes in the forests where the natives live. The surrounding environment is contaminated by spilled oil and industrial waste, and people begin to fall ill. Chevron uses various tactics to delay the trial and maintain business continuity. This is a profound documentary that includes interviews with indigenous people, lawyers for both the defendant and plaintiff, and Chevron employees.

知らなかったのですが、石油はライフサイクルの原点である掘り起こすところからすごい環境破壊なんですね。木を切り倒すのはもちろんのこと、流出する原油、石油の抽出の過程で発生する廃棄物、そして有害ガスまたはフレアスタックによる大気汚染。テレビで大規模の石油流出のニュースで見る被害、例えば石油まみれの鳥の死骸、なんていうのは、規模は小さくなれど油井の近くに住んでいる人にすれば日常問題。もちろん、アメリカや日本などの先進国ではそれなりに対策がなされているのでしょが、エクアドルの低い環境基準とシェブロンの設備投資を抑えたいという強欲が、映画でのこういう事態を引き起こしたのでしょう。

I didn’t know that oil is extremely destructive to the environment, starting from the beginning of its life cycle, which is digging it up. Not only from cutting down trees, but also from oil spills, waste products from the oil extraction process, and air pollution from toxic gases or flare stacks. The damage that we see on TV about large-scale oil spills, such as dead birds covered in oil, is a daily problem for people who live near oil wells, even if the scale is small. Of course, developed countries such as the United States and Japan have taken appropriate measures, but Ecuador’s low environmental standards and Chevron’s greed to reduce investment cost probably caused the situation shown in the movie.

目で見るのはやはり字面を追うのとは違う。原住民の苦しみを映像で見るといたたまれない。生後2週間の赤ちゃんが全身発疹にまみれて泣いている。痛いの？痒いの？内臓の癌で腹部が不規則に膨れた幼児たち。人生これからという10代後半の少年少女が癌で骨と皮になり病院のベッドに力なく横たわっている。おそらく現地に行けばオイルの臭いも混ざり、想像を絶するものがあるだろう。現地のクリニックでのエピソードは自分がそこで働くことを想像させられるが、正直吐き気がする。

Seeing is different from following the text. It’s unbearable to watch videos of the suffering of the indigenous people. A two-week-old baby is covered in rash and is crying. Does it hurt? Does it itch? Toddlers with uneven swelling of the abdomen due to cancer of internal organs. Boys and girls in their late teens, who are supposed to just start their springtime of their lives, are lying helplessly on hospital beds, reduced to skin and bones due to cancer. If you go there, you’ll probably smell the oil mixed with everything else, and it’s something you can’t even imagine. The episode at the local clinic makes me imagine myself working there, and to be honest, it makes me feel nauseous.

その合間に入るシェブロン側の弁護士や科学者の証言。よくもそんなことが言えるかと白々しい。

Testimony from Chevron’s lawyers and scientists comes in between. I wonder why they can say such a shameless thing.

とてもクリーンナップできるレベルの汚染じゃない。賠償金ですむ話じゃない。映画公開時ですでにこの裁判は16年を経過していたけど、さらに14年経った今現在どうなっているのだろうか？

It’s not a level of contamination that can be cleaned up. It’s not a matter of the amount of compensation. At the time of the movie’s release, 16 years had already passed since the trial, but I wonder what happened now, another 14 years later from the movie.

余談：映画の中で歌うおばあちゃん、なかなか美しい声の持ち主です。そしてその響きはアイヌのムックリを思い出させます。あと、DVDの表紙の少女美しいですね〜。映画の中で一回だけ出てきます。

Side note: The grandmother who sings in the movie has a very beautiful voice. The sound reminds me of the Ainu’s mukkuri (a music instrument made of bamboo). Also, the girl on the cover of the DVD is so beautiful. She shows up once in the movie.
