第三回マスターリサイクラープログラムおさらい「プラスチックリサイクル」 Master Recycler Program Review #3 “Plastic Recycling”

今まで私のブログを読んでいただいた方は気がついていると思いますが、私は本当にプラスチックが嫌いです。その理由は

  1. 物質のサイクルの最初から最後まで健康と環境に悪い。
  2. 倫理的にリサイクル、処理されない。
  3. 永遠に環境に残るわりには10年経つとボロボロになって使い物にならない。
  4. 食品用のパッケージに使われているプラスチックは、染み出す化学物質を考えると本当に嫌。
  5. あちこちに散らばっているゴミの多くはプラスチック。景観にも悪い。
  6. 色々な商品のパッケージは、買って持ち帰ったら捨てるだけ。これ以上の無駄はない！

If you’ve read my blog so far, you’ve probably noticed that I really hate plastic. The reason is

  1. It is bad for health and the environment from the beginning to the end of the material cycle.
  2. Not ethically recycled or processed.
  3. Even though it remains in the environment forever, it falls apart after 10 years and is no longer usable.
  4. The plastic used in food packaging is really disgusting considering the chemicals it leaches out.
  5. Most of the garbage scattered around is plastic. It’s also bad for the scenery.
  6. All you have to do is throw away the packaging of various products after you buy and take them home. There is no more waste than that!

本題に入る前に、再度重要なことを言っておきたいのです。まず、ことプラスチックに関して言えば、リサイクルは問題解決になりません。もともとリサイクルされるのも全体の数パーセントしかありませんが、リサイクルされてちゃんとした商品になるものはほんの一部で、残りはダウンサイクルと言って、もっと環境や健康に悪いものに変えられたり、燃料として燃やされています（前回のブログ参照）。どの過程をとっても眉をひそめるような状況です。

Before I get into the main topic, I would like to say something important again. First, when it comes to plastics, recycling is not the solution. Only a few percent of all things are recycled to begin with, but only a small portion is recycled and turned into proper products. The rest is down-cycled, which means that it is changed into something that is more harmful to the environment and health. It is also burned as fuel (see my previous blog). It’s a situation that raises eyebrows no matter which process you see.

プラスチック問題を解決するためには、生産を止めるしかないのです。ただ、もう作られてしまったプラスチックはどうにかしないといけないので、リサイクルは選択の一つであると考えられます。

The only way to solve the plastic problem is to stop production. However, we have to do something with the plastic that has already been made, so I think recycling is one option.

さて、購入してしまったプラスチックをできるだけリサイクルしようと思うと、かなーり大変なことに気がつくと思います。形や大きさ、そしてレジン番号。袋だけでも非常に多数の種類がありますね。正しくリサイクルすることはコンタミを避けリサイクル市場で高く売るためには重要なことです。しかし、ここで立ち止まって考えて欲しいのです。リサイクルのために頭を費やすのではなく、プラスチックを買わない方法に頭を費やす方がよっぽど合理的でしょう！例えば、プラスチックの袋に入っているりんごを買うのは、バラでりんごを5個買うのと比べて、一体誰がどれだけ得するのでしょうか？消費者のその4秒の効率化のために、油田やプラスチック製造工場の近くに住んでいる人たちは環境汚染に苦しんでいるんですよ。りんごであれば消費者が苦しむことはないかもしれませんが、プラスチックの容器に入っている油だったらどうでしょう？油はプラスチックの染み出しを促進するだけでなく、プラスチックに吸着している様々な化学物質も吸収します。つまり、様々な毒物の溶け出した油を調理に使ってしまうといことですね。

Now, if you try to recycle as much of the plastic you have purchased as possible, you will find that it is quite challenging. Shape, size, and resin number… There are so many different types of bags… Correct recycling is
important to avoid contamination and sell at a high price in the recycling market. But I want you to stop and think about this here. Instead of spending your time on recycling, it makes more sense to spend your time on ways to avoid buying plastic! For example, compare buying 5 apples in a plastic bag and buying 5 apples individually. So, who in the world benefits from this and how much? People who live near oil rig and plastic manufacturing factories are suffering from environmental pollution for the 4 seconds of efficient shopping by consumers. The consumers may not suffer if it’s apples, but what if it’s oil in a plastic container? Oil not only accelerates the leaching of plastics, but also absorbs various chemicals from the plastics. In other words, oil containing various toxic substances is used for cooking.

下の文章を使うのはこれで3度目ですが、プラスチックほど消費を最小限にした方がいいものはありません。

私たちの子孫がこれからもこの地球上で安全に暮らしていくためには、消費を最小限にした上、リユーズ、リパーパス、リサイクルなどの資源管理をすることで循環型社会を作らないといけないのです。まず「Reduce, Reduce, Reduce!」です。

This is the third time I have used the following sentence, but there is nothing better to minimize the consumption of plastic.

In order for our descendants to continue to live safely on this earth, we must create a circular society by, first minimizing consumption and, then managing resources through reuse, repurposing, and recycling. That is “Reduce, Reduce, Reduce!” first.

また前置きが長くなってしまいましたが、本題です。

プラスチックのリサイクル方法 How to recycle plastic

  • リサイクルの前に再利用、他のことに使う
    • プラスチックの袋はゴミ袋に
    • 四角い容器は野菜の苗床に
    • ペットボトルはジョウロとして
    • 子供の工作
    • などなど、皆さんの無限の想像力にお任せします。
  • Reuse and repurpose before recycling
    • Plastic bags as garbage bags
    • Square containers can be used as vegetable seeding beds
    • Plastic bottles can be used as watering cans
    • Children’s crafts
    • Etc. I’ll leave the rest up to your unlimited imagination.

  • 自治体の回収：リサイクルカート
    • 6オンス以上の丸い容器とボトル（首が細くなっているもの）のみ（レジン番号は関係ありません。容器は丸くないといけません。）
    • その他のプラスチックをカートに入れると危険！です。プラスチックの袋は機械に引っかかってベルトコンベイヤーを止めてしまうし、プラスチックの容器の蓋は飛ばされて従業員に当たることもあります。また、平らなので機械処理で紙と一緒に仕分けされてしまいます。仕分けの大部分が未だに人の手で行われています。従業員の負担が増えないように、入れていいとわかっているものだけリサイクルのカートに入れましょう。
  • Curbside collection: recycling cart
    • Only round containers and bottles (thin necks) that are 6 ounces or larger (resin number does not matter; containers must be round)
    • It is dangerous! to put other plastics in your cart. Plastic bags can get caught in machines and stop conveyor belts, and plastic lids can fly off and hit employees. Also, because lids are flat, they end up being sorted along with paper during mechanical sorting. Most sorting is still done manually by human. To avoid increasing the burden on the employees, only put items in the recycling cart that you know are accepted.
  • その他の団体の回収：自治体の回収だけでは全然足りません。が、ポートランドにいるのでたくさんの選択肢があります（詳細は下線のリンク参照。）。
  • Collection by other organizations: Curbside collection alone is not enough. But we are in Portland, so we have a lot of options (see the underlined link for details).
