Waste-Free Advocates (WFA)とはNPOの一つで、ゼロウェイストを掲げるビジネスを応援し、再利用を社会的にシステム化することを目的とした団体です。これもマスターリサイクラープログラムを通して関わりを持った活動の一つです。世の中にはリサイクルしてもしきれないほどの物質があるわけで、方向性を再利用とリペア（修繕）に持っていかないことには、この人新世（アントロポセン）の環境破壊に対する問題解決にはならないのです。今回の年次総会には、目的を同じとした様々な方向からの人たちが集まっていました。以下で紹介するビジネス、団体の他に、ポートランド市職員、DEQ職員、マスターリサイクラープログラムの講師のStacy (Metro)、第88回卒業生、そして50年前からゼロウェイスト活動を行なっている素晴らしいおばあちゃんとおじいちゃん達。一人一人が自己紹介で述べたビジョンはどれも熱意のこもったもので、目頭が熱くなりました。

Waste-Free Advocates (WFA) is an Non Profit Organization that supports zero-waste businesses and participates in developing systeme-wide reuse initiatives. This is also one of the activities I have been involved with through the Master Recycler Program. There is so much material in the world that it cannot be recycled, so unless we shift our focus to reuse and repair, we will not be able to solve the problems of environmental destruction in the Anthropocene. This year’s annual meeting brought together people from all walks of life with the same goal. In addition to the businesses and organizations mentioned below, we also had a number of employees from the City of Portland, DEQ staff, Master Recycler Program instructor Stacy (Metro), Class 88 Alumni, and an amazing grandmas and granpas who have been involved in zero waste for 50 years. The visions that each person said in their self-introductions were filled with enthusiasm, so I was tearing up.

今回のミーティングでのハイライトはジーンおばあちゃん。50年前からの市民活動家。ゼロウェイスト活動だけでなく、食料品の原材料表示の義務化に一役かった方で、私と次女の命の恩人とも言えます。私の次女は多くの食物（小麦、卵、乳製品、一部の豆類、一部のナッツ類、ピーナッツ）にアレルギーがあり、原材料を一つ一つチェックしないと加工品は一つも買うことができません。原材料表示がなかったら、全ての食料を一から作らないといけなかったことでしょう（醤油は作るの大変そうだな。。。）！ジーンとその仲間の女性達（元ポートランド市長のVera Katzも含む。）の活動があったからこそ、今のリサイクルやオーガニックの野菜に関心の高いオレゴンがあると言ってもいいでしょう。

The highlight of this meeting was Grandma Jeanne, citizen activist for 50 years. In addition to zero-waste campaigning, she also played a role in making it mandatory to display ingredients on food products, and I can say that she is a lifesaver for me and my second daughter. My second daughter is allergic to many foods (wheat, eggs, dairy products, some legumes, some nuts and peanuts), and I cannot buy any processed products without checking each ingredient one by one. If we didn’t have ingredient labels, I would have had to make all our food from scratch (soy sauce seems difficult to make…)! Thanks to the work of Jeanne and her fellow women (including former Portland Mayor Vera Katz), I can say that today’s Oregon exists where recycling and organic vegetables are of high interest.

From here, I will introduce the businesses and organizations I met at the meeting.

先ずは、Revino。ドイツやオーストリアでは当たり前のシステムですが、再利用できるワインボトルを回収、洗浄しワイナリーに再提供するサービスです。Revinoのボトルは普通のワインボトルより軽いとか（400gと500gの違いは持ってもわからなかったなぁ）。瓶はリサイクルできるじゃん！って思う人もいらっしゃると思いますが、瓶のリサイクルには大量のエネルギーが必要です。また、リサイクル工場の周辺は粉塵問題が発生します。なので、やはり再利用が一番環境には優しいのです。

First of all, Revino. A common system in Germany and Austria, this service collects reusable wine bottles, cleans them, and resupplies them to wineries. A bottle of Revino wine bottle is lighter than regular wine bottle (I couldn’t tell the difference between 400g and 500g even when I held it). Bottles can be recycled! Some people may be wondering, but recycling bottles requires a large amount of energy. Additionally, dust problems occur around recycling plants. Therefore, reusing is the most environmentally friendly option.

次は、eco-school NETWORKさん。義務教育の子供達を対象に教育活動を行なっています。ジーンとWFAとの関わりが深く、たくさんの関係者が来てらっしゃいました。

Next is eco-school NETWORK. They carry out educational activities for grade-school children. They have a deep connection with Jeanne and WFA, and many people from this organization were in attendance.

そして、URBAN GLEANERS。スーパーやレストランから余った食料品を回収し、貧しくて十分に食料品が買えない家庭に提供しています。アメリカはGDPで言えば裕福な国ですが、実際には貧富の差が激しい社会的に貧しい国です。オレゴンも例外ではなく、子供の5人に1人は「次はいつ食べることができるかわからない」といった不安定な環境で暮らしています。汚名（Stigma)もあり、アウトリーチにまだまだ改善の余地がありそうです。

And URBAN GLEANERS. Collecting surplus food from grocery stores and restaurants and donating those to the people in need. America is a wealthy country in terms of GDP, but in reality it is a socially poor country with a huge gap between rich and poor. Oregon is no exception; one in five children do not have sufficient access to food and are unsure when they will eat next. They are in unstable situation. There is also stigma about the poor, and I think there is still room for improvement in outreach.

そしてOKAPI reusables。カフェに洗って再利用できるタンブラーを提供し、そのカフェを環境に優しいと宣伝する会社です。メトロエリアではまだまだポートランド市内が中心。もっとワシントン郡とクラッカマス郡にも波及していって欲しいものです。Margotのアプリによるとうちから一番近いのはBonny SlopeにあるAurora Cafeです。偶然にも近々そこで人と会うので、自分のタンブラーを忘れたらOKAPI使います。

Then, OKAPI reusables. This company provides cafes with washable and reusable tumblers and promote their cafes as eco-friendly. In Portland Metro Area, the cafes are still concentrated in the city of Portland. I would like to see more of this spread to Washington and Clackamas Counties. According to Margot’s app, the closest one to our house is Aurora Cafe in Bonny Slope. Coincidentally, I’ll be meeting someone there soon, so if I forget my tumbler, I’ll use OKAPI.

今日あったビジネスで（私にとって）一番役に立ちそうなのが、なんとこのbbteajarsさん。バブルティー（タピオカ茶）用の洗浄して再利用できるマイバブルティーカップを売っています！いや、私じゃなくて隣人がバブルティー好きなのよ。リサイクルに持っていくバブルティーの容器がガレージに山積みになってるから教えてあげなくちゃ♪ QRコードをスキャンすればどこのバブルティーショップがマイカップを使ってくれるかわかります。って、マイカップ持っていけば10％オフの店もある！いいね！

The one that seemed to be the most useful (to me) in today’s business was bbteajars. They sell reusable cups for bubble tea! No, it’s not me, it’s my neighbor who likes bubble tea. I see a pile of bubble tea containers in their garage to take to the recycling event, so I wanna tell them about this reusable bubble tea cups♪ If you scan the QR code, you can find the businesses who accept these reusable cups. And, if you bring your own cup, you can get 10% off at some stores! nice!

次はGround Score Association。道端でゴミを拾う人たちの団体です。いかにゴミが落ちているか、それもリサイクルできるものもたくさん落ちているかということを思い知らされました。この団体を通じてホームレスから職を見つけ住居に住めるようになった方もいます。

Next up is Ground Score Association. This is a group of people who pick up trash on the roadside. I learned how much trash they collected and a lot of things were recycled. Through this organization, some people have gone from being houseless to finding work and housing.

最後にAstro-Noughtさん。Noughtはゼロって意味だそうです。バーコードをスキャンすると、マテリアルが何で、どこでリサイクルできるか教えてくれるアプリを開発中。アプリはまだ開発中のため、画面はシェアできません。これあったら一般人に便利だなぁ。現在までに17,000商品のバーコードを登録したそうです（なんて地道な作業）！地元スーパーのニューシーズンズマーケットと健康食品スーパー、ホールフーズ、の中央棚（パッケージ食品棚）のほとんどを網羅していました。アドビの社員と二人で開発中でターゲットはDEQ。DEQが認定してくれるようなアプリを作りたいとのこと。資金はどうしているのかと尋ねたら、投資元に影響されたくないので、無資金で開発中とのこと。たくましいですね。私は密かにこのアプリがあったら目を凝らしてレジン番号を見る必要がなくなるので、リサイクルイベントで活躍する40歳以上のマスターリサイクラーにはこれとないヘルパーだと思います。

Lastly, Astro-Nought. Nought means zero per Bob. They are developing an app that, when you scan a barcode, will tell you which material it is made of and where it can be recycled. The app is still under development, so I can’t share the actual screen. This would be convenient for ordinary people. So far, they have registered barcodes for 17,000 products (what a painstaking process)! Most of the center shelves (packaged food shelves) of local grocery stores, such as New Seasons Market and health food store, Whole Foods, were covered. The app has been developed by an Adobe employee, Brad, and Bob. Their target is DEQ. They want to create an app that will be certified by DEQ. When I asked them how they are raising funds, Bob told me that they don’t take any funds because they did not want to be influenced by their investors. Wow. If I had this app, I wouldn’t have to strain my eyes to see the resin number, so I think that it would be of great help for master recyclers over the age of 40 who work at recycling events!

そんなこんなで、とても有意義な年次総会で本当に参加してよかったと思いました。そして、近所のストリップモールに戻って見ると、あちこちで使い捨てのパッケージが使われていますね。まだまだ「機会」はたくさんあるんだなと実感しました。おっしゃー、やるぞー！

It was such a meaningful meeting for me, and I was so glad to be able to attend. And then I went back to my local strip mall, I saw disposable packaging everywhere. I realized that there are still many “opportunities” out there. Hey, let’s do it!
