〜きのね園と一緒にした活動の報告です。Reporting my activities with Kinone Space.〜

きのね園はオレゴン州ポートランドにある日本語のプリスクールですが、ひょんなところから職員や保護者の方、そして園長さんと知り合いになりました。その”ひょん”ですが、わたしが投稿したブログをJapanese Women Portland (JWPDX)というポートランド在住日本人女性のグループのフェイスブックでシェアしたところ、きのね園のグリーンチームで話題になったらしく、園長先生のあきさんからお声がかかったという次第です。

Kinone Space is a Japanese preschool in Portland, Oregon, and I got to know the staff, parents and principal through a strange coincidence. That “coincidence” was like this. When I shared the blog post on the Facebook page of a group for Japanese women living in Portland called Japanese Women Portland (JWPDX), it became a topic of conversation among the Kinone Space Green Team, and I ended up getting a message from Aki, the principal of the preschool.

はじめは、きのね園の保護者や卒園児の保護者の方々にリサイクルの話をして欲しいということでした。あきさんもその他の保護者の方々も環境問題やリサイクルに関心が高い方達です。あきさんにカフェで初めてお会いした時も、打ち合わせで我が家にいらっしゃった時も、そう言った話やネイチャースケープ（この地域に生えている植物で庭をデザインする）の話でとても盛り上がりました。

At first, she wanted me to talk about recycling to the parents of current and former students of Kinone Space. Aki and the parents are very interested in environmental issues and recycling. When I first met Aki at a cafe and when she came to my house for a meeting, we had a great time talking about this and nature-scaping (designing a garden using plants that grow in the area).

このきのね園は、あきさんの自宅を一部プリスクールとして開業しているものですが、おもちゃはなく、自然をおもちゃとして子供たちを育てているそうです（庭を出れば大きな公園がある）。また、裏庭で育てた野菜や旬の食材を用いて給食を作っているとのこと。裏庭には畑だけでなく、大きな砂場（泥場？）やモンゴル民族が使うYurt（テントみたいなもの）がありますが、ほとんど保護者の方達と協力して作ったそうです。他の家族との繋がりがあって一緒に作業するって、Commune（コミューン、社会共同体）とかEcoVillageみたいでいいですねぇ。

This Kinone Space is a preschool that is run from a part of Aki’s home. They don’t have regular toys, but her students use nature as their toys (there is a large park outside the backyard). She also uses vegetables grown in the
backyard and seasonal ingredients to prepare school lunches. In addition to a garden, her backyard also has a large sandbox (or maybe a mudbox?) and a yurt (a tent-like structure used by Mongolians). It seems that most of them was made with the cooperation of the parents. It’s great that they have connections with other families and work together, like a commune or EcoVillage.

そんなこんなで、まずは2月にYurtで勉強会をさせていただきました。この時は、ワシントン郡のRicardoがマスターリサイクラーの授業で使ったスライドに沿って、リサイクルを含めた資源管理、特に使う資源を減らすこと（リドュース）に重点を置いて話をさせていただきました。15人ほどの保護者の方達に参加いただいて、質疑応答が活発に行われました。関心の高い方々に集まっていただいて、本当に満足でした。ワシントン郡からはこの日の勉強会のために、チコバッグやいろいろなハンドアウトをいただきました（チコバッグは抽選で5名の方に差し上げたんですが、大好評でしたね）。

So, first of all, we held a study session at Yurt in February. That time, I talked about material management including recycling, based on slides used by Ricardo (Washington County) in his Master Recycler class. I focused especially on reducing the resources used. About 15 parents attended, and
there was an active question and answer session. I was really pleased to see the people who are interested in the topic there. Washington County provided us with Chico bags and various handouts for the study session (we gave the Chico bags to five people by lottery, and they were very pleased).

次に、4月にきのね園が主催した「ご縁フェス」というイベントに参加させていただきました。メインは東大名誉教授の汐見先生の「AI社会における子育て」の講演と、日本でこども園を経営されている前島先生の「食で変わる子供達」の講演だったんですが、その後の30分の弁当時間のワークショップ、物品販売の一つとして、コンポストについてのワークショップをさせていただきました。嬉しいことに、マスターリサイクラープログラムを卒業したばかりの日本人の友達よりこさんと一緒に！わたしがコンポストについての基本知識と庭でのコンポストの作り方、よりこさんがダンボールで作るコンポストについて説明。場所や機材に不安があったので、小学生や中学生のようにプレゼンテーションボードを準備。手作業で色々しないといけなかったから、思いの他時間がかかった。。。まさか、30分のプレゼンのボードを作るのに5時間以上かかるなんて。。。（絶対このプレゼンボード、また使ってやる！）でも、他にも面白そうなワークショップや物品販売がある中、15人ほどの方に来ていただけました。その内のおひと方とは、その後もメールで庭用のコンポスト容器についてやりとりをさせていただきました。

Next, I participated in an event called “Goen Festival” hosted by Kinone Space in April (Goen means connection). The main events were a lecture on “childcare in AI era” by Professor Shiomi, an emeritus professor at the University of Tokyo, and a lecture on “kids changed by food” by Teacher Maejima, who runs a kindergarten in Japan. Afterwards, there was a 30-minute lunchtime workshop and a sales event. I gave a workshop on composting. I was happy to be joined by my Japanese friend Yoriko, who had just graduated from the Master Recycler program! During the workshop, I explained the basics of composting and how to make compost in a garden, while Yoriko explained how to make compost in a cardboard box. I was worried about the space and equipment, so I prepared a presentation board like elementary and middle school students. It took a lot longer than I expected because I had to do a lot of things by hand. I never thought it would take more than five hours to make a board for a 30-minute presentation. (I’ll use this presentation board again!) Although there were other interesting workshops and items for sale, 15 people came to our workshop. I exchanged emails with one of them about garden compost bins even after the workshop.

なんだか、マスターリサイクラーの仕事、地道だな。モダセンター（1万2千人収容できるイベント会場）でやるほど観客いないしなー。でも、こうやって人と人との繋がりがあるからこそ、わたしが伝えた情報が浸透することを願ってます。

The work of a master recycler needs constant efforts. Well, there aren’t enough spectators to give a lecture at the Moda Center (haha)… But I hope that the information I convey will sink in because of these connections between us.
