I had a dental appointment for teeth cleaning yesterday. My regular hygienist was not there. Instead, very young one cleaned my teeth. I am not going to comment on her skills, but the same ritual in the US, she tried to give me a “goody bag” at the end. As you know, the goody bag has a tooth brush, floss and toothpaste in a plastic bag.

昨日は歯医者で歯のクリーニングをしてもらいました。いつもの歯科衛生士がいませんでした。その代わりに、とても若い衛生士が私の歯をクリーニング。その人の技術には触れませんが、アメリカではいつものこと、最後に「お土産」を渡されそうになりました。ご存知かもしれませんが、お土産袋には歯ブラシ、フロス、歯磨き粉が入っています。

I knew this was going to happen, so I promptly said “I don’t need that. I am doing Plastic Free July.” She was very nice that she just said “OK” and didn’t try to give it to me anyhow.

こうなることはわかっていたので、すかさず「いりません。プラスチックフリー月間やっているので。」衛生士はとてもいい人で、ただ「OK。」と言ってどうにかして渡そうとしたりはしませんでした。

If I didn’t know about this custom and was not doing this challenge, I would have received it as I did in the past. This world is the one where plastic naturally barges into your space if you don’t resist. You know why? Because plastic manufactures (oil companies) are trying really hard to sell their products. They are trying to produce 40% more plastics in the next ten years. We are not even taking care of the current plastic crisis. What is going to happen in the future with the increased plastic waste?

こういう習慣があると知らずに、このチャレンジをしてもいなかったら、以前のように受け取っていたことでしょう。この世界では拒否しないとプラスチックが自分のところに入り込んでくるのですから。どうしてだかわかりますか？プラスチックの製造会社（石油会社）がとっても頑張って自分たちの製品を売ろうとしているから。プラスチック業界はこの先10年の間に現在の4割り増しのプラスチックを製造しようとしています。今ですらプラスチック危機をどうにもできないのに、この先もっと増えたらどうなるんでしょうね？
