This is not just about saving materials from going to landfill, it is more about decreasing the consumption of new materials. You know, making new stuff costs the environment, by mining, manufacturing, shipping, using and at last, sending to landfill. Do you know what the stuff you buy is causing around the world, at mining sites, around factories and coastal cities?

As the leader of the field trip, I had to come up with some activities. Hmmmm. At the last minute, I decided to ask participants to give some of the items “awards”🏆 Gold award🥇, Silver award🥈, Bronze award🥉, Hard work award and Futuristic award. One of the participants said that she was able to take a closer and longer look 👀 than usual since she was deciding the awards.

遠足なので、何かしないとなぁ、と思って直前に思いついたのが、いくつかの作品に「賞」🏆をあげること。金賞🥇、銀賞🥈、銅賞🥉、努力賞と未来賞。参加者の一人に「賞を決めながら見て回るので、普段よりじっくり見て回ることができました👀」と言っていただきました。

ReClaim It is a nonprofit retail store where creative people of Portland can find unique materials to reuse, repair & reimagine. -cited from their website.

The store is in NE Portland and run by a non profit organization, Cracked Pots. Their volunteers glean materials from Metro Central transfer station (aka “dump”) where trash is collected to be transferred to a landfill. Instead of getting landfilled, the salvaged materials are cleaned and fixed and sold at the store.

They have saved

1,235,173 lbs (618 tons)

of reusable materials since 2014.

このお店はポートランドのノースイーストにあって、非営利団体のCracked Potsが運営しています。ボランティアの方々がメトロのごみ収集場所(ここで集められたゴミが埋め立て所に移送されます)で物を集めます。埋め立て所に送られずにボランティアに救出された物は、キレイにしてもらったり修理してもらってからお店で売られます。

They also have art shows and events, like “Holiday Shop”. At Holiday Shop, over 70 local artists sell their art. They are required to use more than 80% of the materials from recycled or reused items. They are all unique and you cannot find them anywhere else. I took some pictures there. Please click them and take a closer look👀.

アートショーやイベントも開催していて、「ホリデーショップ」もそのひとつ。ホリデーショップは70人以上のローカルアーティストが出品販売しています。条件として、マテリアルの80%以上はリユースや中古のものを使わないといけません。どれもユニークで他では見つけられません。いくつか写真を撮ってきたので、クリック↓してよーく見て👀ください。

It was very inspiring to see these art. Instead of giving pollution by gifting a new stuff, this is a low impact excellent gift alternative. If you missed it this year, please try to visit them next year.
