Gardening this Week: No Dig Gardening 03/15/2023

 <リスト>

 <List>

  • Plant out seedlings I grew in the house (see below)

 手順

 How To

  1. Cut annual rye grass, the green manure, which was planted last fall.
  2. Plant seedlings. This time, I planted komatsu-na, lettuce, and mustard greens.
  3. Mulch around the planted seedlings with cut rye grass.
  4. Scatter Bokashi (I will explain Bokashi some other day).

On March 12, I planted the seedlings I had grown inside our house in the garden. I worked during breaks in the rain. It was sooooo cold! Since last year, I have been working on my backyard renovation with the goal
of creating a garden that will be usable 10 years from now. 10 years from now, I will be almost 60 years old😱, and I hope to be able to continue gardening even though my back and legs will probably be weaker. The main theme is No-Dig gardening. I am referring to the book “You can do this!
Natural Vegetable Garden” by Atsunori Takeuchi. The subtitle of this book is exactly “Without digging, grow together by growing grass“. He uses mainly grass as green manure and grass mulch. Green manure is usually tilled and
mixed with soil to make the soil fertile, but the author does not till the soil but cuts the grass and uses it as a grass mulch.
This method makes a lot of sense.

  • When growing green manure, the roots till the soil.
  • By mulching with cut grass,
    • Provides nutrients for microorganisms in the soil.
    • Prevents soil erosion by wind and rain.
    • Prevents weeds because it blocks light.
  • Since the soil is not tilled, it does not destroy the soil structure created by microorganisms and grass roots. When the soil is tilled by human, it becomes temporarily fluffy, but it hardens after rains.
  • No back pain!

So, let’s hope I am still doing the same thing 10 years from now!

  1. Great blog post! I love the idea of no-dig gardening and using grass as green manure and mulch. Have you noticed any significant differences in the health of your plants compared to traditional gardening methods?

    1. Thanks for your comment. I just started No-Dig gardening with Hugelkultur bed last year. I see a big difference already. The soil stays soft to the point I want to tap it down (^^;) and it still looks fertile after a year. The strawberry plants got huge (compared to the last batch I got years ago) and produced lots of juicy berries last year. But I used lots of compost to start with the first year (last year), so I hope I will see the real effect this year and on.
