今日はRock Dustのお話です。去年読んだガーデニングの本によると、植物が使ったり、雨で土壌の下の方に沈んだり流れたりしたミネラルを、Rock Dustで補充するのが良い、ということでした。土中の微生物がミネラルを使い、できた栄養物を植物に供給します。Rock Dustというのは、大まかに4種類あります。氷河から採れたもの、ユタ州産のAzomite®︎、玄武岩、そして花崗岩。これらの岩を砕いたもの、または他の工業産物（キッチンのカウタートップなど？）の副産物です。どれがいいかは、どこに住んでいるかによるんですが、私の場合は手に入りやすい氷河のRock Dustを買いました。

Today, I am going to talk about Rock Dust. According to a gardening book I read last year, it was suggested that Rock Dust be used to replenish the minerals that have been used by plants, leached out or sunk to the bottom of the soil. Microorganisms in the soil use minerals and supply the nutrients they produce to plants. Rock Dust are roughly of four types. Glacier-sourced, Utah Azomite®, basalt, and granite. Rock Dust is powder crushed from these rocks, or other industrial by-products (granite kitchen countertops?). Which one you use depends on where you live, but I bought Glacier Rock Dust, which is easy to find.

ブログであまりいい加減なことを書きたくないので、ファクトチェックしているのですが、今回も？？？？情報過多な上に、質の高い情報を見極めるのが難しい。ブログを始めて学んだんですが、サーチエンジンに引っかかりやすくするためのトリックとか有料のサービスもあります。また、ドキュメンタリーを見たのですが、グーグル自体も公共のプラットフォームではないので、偏見や情報操作とかあるみたいですね。

I don’t want to write sloppy things on my blog, so I’m doing a fact check, but this time, too? ? ? ? With so much information out there, it’s still hard to find quality information. This is the first time I’ve learned about blogging, but there are tricks and paid services that make it easier for search engines to find you. Also, I saw a documentary about Googe and Google itself is not a public platform, so it seems that there is prejudice and information manipulation.

そんなこんなで、Rock Dustも相反する情報が。利点を強調するのはもちろん販売側から、そして反対意見は、数は多くないですが個人のブログが多いかな。不利点として上げられてるのは、底上げをしてある花壇（raised bed）では意味がない、鉛やアルミなどの重金属が含まれている商品もある、くらいかな？思ったより少ない。あとは、YouTubeに底上げ花壇（raised bed）を使った実験のビデオがあって、compost（堆肥）やバイオ炭（もみがらくん炭など）と比べて、Rock Dust群では収量が劣っていたこと。もともと、底上げ花壇の場合は、毎年土が痩せこけていって、堆肥を足さないと野菜が育たないんですよね。だから、この実験は根本から間違っていて、堆肥を対照群とし（窒素、リン、カリウムが一定）、堆肥プラスバイオ炭と堆肥プラスRock Dustを比較しないといけないと思う。。。

With all that said, Rock Dust also has conflicting information. Emphasizing the benefits, of course, is from the sales side, and the number of dissenting opinions is not many, but it is mostly from personal blogs. They say that Rock Dust does not work with raised beds or it may contain heavy metals such as lead and aluminum. That was about it. Less than I thought. And then, you can see the video on YouTube. There is a video of an experiment using compost, biochar (rice husk charcoal, etc.) and Rock Dust in raised beds. The yield was inferior in the Rock Dust group. Well, first of all, in the case of raised beds, the soil would become less nutrient every year, and vegetables would not grow well unless compost was added. So I think the experiment is fundamentally flawed and should be compared with compost as a control (constant nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium), and compare with compost plus biochar and compost plus Rock Dust…

重金属は、私が買ったRock Dustにはポートランド周辺の土よりも少ないことが判明。安心して使えます。

As for heavy metals, I found out that Rock Dust I bought has less heavy metals than the soil in Portland area. I can use it at ease.

情報を総合して消化してみると、うちの庭では

• 芝生：養分をいっぱい必要とするため、14年たった今ではおそらくミネラル不足になってると思う。→ Rock Dustあげる
• 植木：どうだろ？14年間、普通の肥料しかあげてなかったから、ミネラル補給してもいいかも。→ Rock Dustあげる
• フルーツの木：同上。→ Rock Dustあげる
• 底上げ花壇：これは去年作ったもので、中身はHugelkultur bed。花壇用の土の代わりに木の幹や枝、芝生をひっくり返したもの、堆肥を入れて作りました。耕さない花壇にするために緑肥や草マルチ、落ち葉マルチなどの自然農法を取り入れてます。微生物やミミズが活躍する活きた土を目指しているので、微生物の助けになるRock Dustを入れるのは理にかなっていると思う。→ Rock Dustあげる
• Hugelkultur Bed：同上。→ Rock Dustあげる

After summarizing and digesting the information, I think that in my garden…

• Lawn: probably lacking in minerals after 14 years because it requires a lot of nutrients. → Apply Rock Dust
• Trees and shrubs: Hm? For the past 14 years, I’ve only given normal fertilizer, so can I supply it with minerals? → Apply Rock Dust
• Fruit Trees: Same as above. → Apply Rock Dust
• Raised bed: This one was made last year and the inside is actually a Hugelkultur bed. I put tree trunks, branches, upturned lawns and compost in there instead of soil for raised beds. To make it a No-Dig bed, I am using natural farming methods such as green manure, grass mulch and fallen leaf mulch. Since I’m aiming for a living soil where microorganisms and earthworms are active, I think it makes sense to add Rock Dust to help the microorganisms. → Apply Rock Dust
• Hugelkultur Bed: Same as above. → Apply Rock Dust

単に買ったRock Dustを無駄にしたくないだけかも😓

Maybe I just don’t want to waste the Rock Dust I bought😓
