今週のガーデニングシリーズ、なんだか収拾つかなくなってきたので、テーマをタイトルにつけました。今週は「ハタネズミ」です。

Gardening This Week series is getting a little out of control, so I put a theme in the title. This week, it’s “Voles“.

先日モグラを捕まえて、ホッと一息ついてたら、なーーーーんと、また地面に穴が。。。今回の穴は、周りに土のボコボコがない地面と同じ高さの穴で、明らかにモグラが掘ったものではない。調べたところ、どうやらハタネズミ（Vole）らしい。本来なら地面に近いところに蕁麻疹みたいな通り道を掘るらしいけど、モグラが使っていたモグラ道を使っているのでしょうか？あまり地表近くにネズミの道は見当たらない。木の根っこや皮、野菜、草などを食べるらしい。写真はカワイイのに、かわいくないぞ！もしかしたら、うちの赤椿が弱ってるのもこいつらのせいかも。ブルーベリーの周りにも穴が一杯で心配。

I caught a mole the other day and felt relieved, then again, holes appeared in the ground. . . The holes this time were at the same level with the ground, with no dirt mound around it, and was clearly not dug by moles. After investigating, it seems to be holes dug by voles. Normally, they dug tunnels like hives near the surface. But are they using the mole tunnels that the mole I caught made? I don’t see vole tunnels close to the surface. It seems that they eat tree roots, tree bark, vegetables and grass. The picture looks cute, but what they do is not ! Maybe it’s because of these guys that my red camellia is getting weak. I’m worried about the holes around the blueberries, too.

というわけで、また（一人）対策会議です。モグラの時のように、①罠か②毒か③嫌いなものを置く、という選択肢。やっぱり、効果的で害のないは①罠という結論に。

So, it’s another (one person) countermeasures meeting. Just like with the mole, you have the choice of (1) trap, (2) poison, or (3) repellent. After all, the conclusion is (1) trap since it is effective and harmless.

早速、ホームデポ行って、ネズミ捕り買ってきました（写真右）。設置するのは超簡単。餌を丸い餌入れに入れてレバーを倒し、ネズミの穴の近くに置くだけ。でも、、、

I immediately went to Home Depot and bought a mouse/rat trap (right photo). Super easy to install. Simply place the bait in the round trough, flip the lever, and place it near the vole hole. but….

1日目：ピーナッツバターを餌入れに入れて地面に置いておく。蟻ばっかりよってきて、ネズミは来ない。。。

Day 1: Put peanut butter in the trough and leave it on the ground. Only ants come, but no vole. . .

2日目：水やりしてたら、作動してしまった。ネズミ捕りをさらに穴の近くに移動し、残ってるピーナッツバターの上にオーツ麦を入れてバケツをかぶせる。

Day 2: When I was watering, it triggered. Move the trap closer to the hole and place some oats on top of the peanut butter and cover with a bucket.

3日目：捕まってない。でも、オーツ麦はなくなってる！！！ネズミ、思ったより器用だな。今度は、オーツ麦をピーナッツバターに練り込む。

Day 3: Vole not caught. But oats are gone! ! ! Voles are more skillful than I thought. Now knead the oats into the peanut butter.

4日目：ギャフン！また餌だけキレイに持ってかれた！

Day 4: Dah! Again, only the bait was gone completely!

5日目：餌の上に網をかけ取りにくくする（ネズミ捕りのところにいる時間が長くなって捕まる可能性が高まる？）。

Day 5: Make it difficult to eat by putting a net over the bait (To increase the probability of catching it since a vole stays longer at the trap?).

いちごが熟れて美味しくなる前に捕まえたいよううううう！

I want to catch them before my strawberries are ripe and delicious!!!!
