我が家では私がやってまーす。今日久しぶりに出しました😉 今まで二ヶ月に一回ゴミ出し（埋め立て）してましたが、前回出したのが2月の終わりくらいで今6月の始めなので、今回三ヶ月あきました。離婚前は毎週ゴミ出ししていたので、単純計算して12分の1に減ったわけですね。平均人員が半分に減っているので、一人当たり埋め立てゴミが6分の1に減った計算です。ちょっとした達成感💕

I do at my house. I took out our trash (landfill) today after a while😉 I was taking trash out every other month in the recent months, but the last time I took it out was around the end of February and now it’s the beginning of June, so this time it’s been three months. Before the divorce, I took out the garbage every week, so a simple calculation reduced it to one-twelfth. Since the average number of people in my household has been cut in half, the landfill waste per person has been reduced to one-sixth. A little sense of accomplishment💕

まずは、この近辺のゴミ収集について説明します。アメリカに来てびっくりしました。日本とは全く違います。日本では、各自治体の指定の場所（歩いて数分の所）にゴミやリサイクルを指定の曜日に持って行きますよね。普通は無料（税金として徴収されている？）。アメリカでは、住んでいる区域によって異なると思いますが、一軒家に住んでいる場合は、なんと！家の前までゴミ収集車が取りに来てくれるんですよ。指定の曜日の朝6時までに出しておけば持って行ってもらえます。前日の夕方に出している人がほとんどです。有料サービスですが、とっても便利。アパートに住んでいる場合は、敷地内の大きなダンプスターにいつでも入れることができ、普通はアパートの賃料に含まれています。でも、このサービスを利用しない場合は、ずいぶん遠い所まで車で運転してゴミを持っていかないといけません。しかも有料。うちもそうですが、お金払って回収してもらっている家庭がほとんどだと思います。うちの区域はWaste Managementという会社がゴミ収集をしています。

First of all, I will explain the garbage collection in this area. I was surprised when I came to the US. It is completely different from Japan. In Japan, you have to take your garbage and recycle to the designated place of each municipality (just a few minutes walk) on the designated day of the week. Usually free (collected as tax?). In the US, I think it depends on the area you live in, but if you live in a house, guess what! a garbage truck will come to your house and pick it up for you. If you put the trash cart out by 6:00 in the morning on the specified day of the week, they will take it for you. Most people put it out the evening before. Although it is a paid service, it is very convenient. If you live in an apartment, the large dumpster on site is always available and is usually included in the apartment rent. However, if you don’t use this trash collection service, you will have to drive a long way to haul your garbage. Moreover, there is a charge. Like us, I think that most households pay money to have it collected. In our area, a company called Waste Management collects garbage.

埋め立てゴミのサービスを申し込むと、そのサイズのカートとリサイクル用、庭ゴミ用のカートを持って来てくれます。我が家はもちろん20ガロン。ただ、20ガロンのカートというものはなくて、写真のように35ガロンのカートに20ガロンになるように黒いトレイがはめられています（底上げ😅）。回収するのを毎週ではなくて隔週にしてくれないかと頼んだのですが、そういうサービスはしてないということです。ということで、20ガロンのゴミ箱が最低料金。毎週出しても三ヶ月に一回出しても同じ値段。ズボラな私はロールカート一杯になるまで待ってから、家の前に出しています。ゴミ収集の人もうちをスキップできるので嬉しいハズ？

When you sign up for a trash service, they will bring you a roll cart of the size you signed up for and roll carts for recycling and yard waste. We have a 20 gallon cart, of course. There is no 20-gallon cart actually. They provided me a 35 gallon cart with a black tray to make it to 20 gallons as shown in the picture (a bottom-raised container😅). I asked if they could collect trash every other week instead of every week, but they said they don’t offer that kind of service. So the minimum charge is a 20 gallon trash can. Whether you put it out every week or once every three months, the price is the same. I’m lazy, so I wait until the roll cart is full before putting it out in front of my house. They should be happy that the garbage collector can skip our house, right?

リサイクルは日本ほど厳しくありませんが、回収してくれるものも少ないと思います。区域ごとに何を回収してくれるか異なりますが、私の住んでいるところでは以下のものを回収してくれます（ちなみにお隣のポートランドやビーバートンでは、生ゴミも回収してくれます）。

• 紙、ダンボール：乾燥していて食べ物などが付いてないもの。
• プラスチック：180ml以上の容器のみ（蓋はダメ）、空にして乾燥させる。プラスチックの袋は厳禁。また、テイクアウトの容器なども不可。
• 金属
• 瓶：割れていないもの。
• 新規！電池：今年から電池も回収してくれるようになりました。両方の端をセロテープで止めて、チャックの付いたプラスチックの袋に入れ、瓶のリサイクルの容器に入れます。

Recycling is not as strict as in Japan, but I think they collect fewer items here. What is collected differs from area to area, but where I live, the following items are collected (By the way, in Portland and Beaverton, which are adjacent areas, kitchen waste is also collected).

• Paper & Cardboard: Empty & Dry.
• Plastic: Only containers over 6 oz. (No lids), Empty & Dry. Never Plastic bags. No to-go containers.
• Metal
• Glass: No broken glass.
• New! Batteries: Since this year, batteries are collected. Tape both ends, put them in a zip-sealed plastic bag and place it in Glass Bin.

え？と思うかもしれませんが、瓶と電池以外はすべて一つのリサイクルカートに入れます。そして、家に来てくれるゴミ収集サービス以外使わないのであれば、リサイクルされないものは埋め立てゴミです。（埋め立てゴミに入れてはいけないものもあります。電子機器、ペンキや除虫剤などの危険物です。）

You might think, What? But we put everything in the recycling cart except glass and batteries. And anything that isn’t recycled is landfill waste if you use only the garbage collection service that comes to your home. (Some items should not be placed in landfills, such as electronics, paint and pesticide.)

そして、どうやって我が家が埋め立てゴミを減らしたか。話が長くなりますので、違う機会に詳しく書こうと思いますが、基本的には以下のことをしました。

• 埋め立てゴミになるようなものを買わないようにする。
• リサイクル回収で持って行ってもらえないものを、他の場所でリサイクルする。
• 生ゴミをコンポストする。

Then, how did our family reduced landfill waste? It’s a long story, so I’ll write about it in detail at another time, but basically I did the following.

• Avoid buying things that end up in landfills.
• Recycle items that cannot be picked up curbside at other locations.
• Compost kitchen waste.

生ゴミコンポストをはじめて14年、埋め立てゴミを減らすようにしてから5年、ようやく三ヶ月に一回のゴミ出しまで持ってくることができました。世の中には、一年で買い物袋に一杯分のゴミしか出さない人もいるので、私もまだまだ精進しなきゃね。

It’s been 14 years since I started composting kitchen waste, 5 years since I started reducing garbage. Finally, I was able to bring down to taking trash out every 3 months. There are some people in the world who only have a full shopping bag of garbage in a year, so I will continue to work hard on this.
