「ちえぞうさんのお宅のお庭、キラキラの飾りがあって綺麗ですね。」「あらー、飾りだったらいいんですけど、鳥よけリボンなのよー。」

“Chiezo’s garden is beautiful with glittery decorations, you know.” “Ah. It’s nice if it is a decoration, but unfortunately it’s a bird scare tape.”

鳥さんは大好物のベリーはもちろんのこと、野菜も食べるんです。オウゴンヒワの仲間のレッサーゴールドフィンチは、不断草の葉っぱも種も食べます。スズメ科の鳥たちも、芝生と一緒に生えている雑草の種を食べたりします。ワキアカホウヒチョウやカケスは蒔いたばかりの豆を掘り起こして食べべるし、コマツグミはイチゴが大好き。鳥さんを見るのは好きですが、庭で育てている食物を取られるのはイヤ。

Birds eat not only their favorite berries, but also vegetables. A cousin of American Goldfinch, Lesser Goldfinches eat both the leaves and seeds of Chard. Passerines also eat seeds of weeds that grow in the lawn. Spotted Towhees and California Jays dig up and eat newly planted beans, and American Robins love strawberries. I like watching birds, but I don’t like them to eat my veggies and fruits I grow in my garden.

というわけで、鳥よけリボン。鳥よけリボンは10年以上も使っているのですが、そんなに効果がなくて、鳥よけ網の方を頼りにしてました。ところが、気づいたんです！使い方が良くなかったことに。最近、なんだか家の外がチカチカするなぁ、と思っていたら、お隣さんがさくらんぼの木に鳥よけリボンを使ってました。風が吹くと、七夕の短冊のように美しくなびいてキラキラと光るのです。「本来はこうやって使うものなんだ！」と気づいたわけです。一方、私がどのように鳥よけリボンを使っていたかというと、写真下のように両端を棒や木の枝に縛り付けて固定してました。そうするとなびかないんですね。だから、効いてなかったんです。

So, Bird Scare Tape. I’ve been using these tapes for over 10 years, but they weren’t very effective, so I relied on bird nets instead. But then I realized! That it wasn’t used properly. Recently, I was seeing something flickering outside, and found out that my neighbor placed Bird Scare Tape on her cherry tree. When the wind blows, they flutter beautifully like paper decoration for Tanabata Festival in Japan. I realized, “This is how it’s supposed to be used!” On the other hand, as for how I was using Bird Scare Tape, I tied both ends to a stick or tree branch as shown in the photo below. If you do that, the tape doesn’t flutter. That’s why it didn’t work.

早速、短冊のように風になびくように、鳥よけリボンを設置し直しました。この日は強風で、リボンが飛んでいかないように、右手にセロテープ、左手に鳥よけリボンを持ち、手際よく、イチゴやエンドウの周りに設置。風が吹くと、リボンがキラキラと光るだけでなく、ガサガサと音を立てる。この突然聞こえるガサガサ音にも鳥さんたちはびっくりするんでしょうね。ついでに、ハタネズミにイチゴを食べられないように、一部、鳥よけ網をはりました。一仕事終えて、満足満足。

I immediately placed the Bird Scare Tape so that it flutters in the wind like a paper decoration for Tanabata Festival. The wind was strong that day, so to keep the tapes from flying away, I held Scotch Tape in my right hand and the Bird Scare Tape in my left hand, and swiftly placed them around the strawberries and peas. When the wind blows, those tapes not only sparkle but also rustle. The birds must be frightened by this sudden rustling sound. I also put a bird net around some of the strawberries so that the voles would not eat them. Satisfied after one big job.

翌朝。呑気に満足してる場合じゃなかったーーー！うちの庭は、朝はあまり陽が当たりません。その日は風も弱く、鳥よけリボンの効果ゼロ。。。しかも、コマツグミが鳥よけ網の外からイチゴをつついている現場を目撃！あちゃー。しょうがないので、網を鳥よけ用に貼り直しました。ガーデニングも一筋縄ではいかないですね。

Next morning. It wasn’t the time to be satisfieeeeeeeed! My garden doesn’t get much sun in the morning. The wind was weak that day, and Bird Scare Tape had no effect. . . Moreover, I witnessed a scene where a robin was pecking strawberries from outside the bird net! Dah. Oh well, I re-arranged the net to deter birds. Gardening isn’t easy.
