私が住んでいるオレゴン州のポートランドは、リサイクルが盛んだったり、海も山も近いのでアウトドアを楽しむ人が多かったり、環境問題に関心が高い人が多いところです。この「バックヤードハビタット認定プログラム」も、そんなポートランドならではのプログラム。Portland Audubonという鳥類保護の団体とコロンビア土地信託が行なっているプログラムで、自宅の庭にこの土地の在来種を植えて、この土地の野生種に優しい環境を作ることを促進するものです。15年前に家を買った時から気になっていたんですが、当時は私が住んでいるワシントン郡は対象外でした。いつのまにか対象内になっていたので、応募することにしました。応募してから三ヶ月ほどでようやく連絡が来ました。

Portland, Oregon, where I live, is famous for recycling, outdoor activities since it is close to the ocean and mountains, and the people who are very concerned about environmental issues. This “Backyard Habitat Certification Program” is also a program unique to Portland. This program, run by Portland Audubon, a bird conservation group, and the Columbia Land Trust, encourages people to plant native species in their gardens to create an environment that is friendly to local wildlife. I’ve been curious about this program since I bought my house 15 years ago, but at the time, Washington County, where I live, was out of their service area. Before I knew it, I became eligible to apply, so I decided to do it. About three months after I applied, I finally got a reply.

認定までのプロセス

1. プログラム担当者の訪問。
2. 担当者からレポートを受け取る。
3. レポートに基づいて、雑草を抜いたり、在来種を植える。
4. 準備ができたら、認定者が訪問する。
5. 全ての基準をクリアしたら認定を受けることができる。この認定は3年間有効。

Certification process

1. Initial visit from a program technician.
2. Receive the site report from the technician.
3. Pull out weeds and plant native species and improve your habitat based on the report.
4. When you are ready, the person in charge for certification will visit you.
5. If you meet all the criteria, you can receive certification. This certification is valid for 3 years.

9月の中旬に担当者の訪問を受けました。裏庭を見ていただいて、一緒に認定を受けるためのプランを考えました。まずは、現在ある在来種を見ていただきました。訪問時にすでに植えてあったものは、オレゴングレープ、kinnikinnick、ノコギリソウ、カマス、オレゴンアイリス、ルピナス、エンレイソウ。それから担当者が見つけてくれた（私は雑草だと思っていた）ダグラスシモツケ。結構あるのですがこれらの在来種が点在しているためアレンジしないといけません（なんでかは下記参照）。それから、取り除く雑草。うちにはブラックベリー、ツタ（English Ivy）、ヒメツルニチニチソウがあります。そのあとは、クリアする様々な認定基準の話をしたり、私が考えているプランを聞いてもらったりしました。担当者のレイチェルとこれからのプランについてああだこうだと話すのはとっても有意義で楽しかった〜。

I received the initial visit in mid-September. We took a look at our backyard and think about a plan to get certified. First, we looked at the existing native plants. I had tall Oregon grape, kinnikinnicks, yarrow, Camas, Oregon iris, lupine and trillium. And Douglas Spirea which the technician found (I thought it was a weed). I already had a lot but since these native plants are scattered, I have to make arrangements (see below for reasons). Then invasive weeds to remove. I have blackberries, ivy (English Ivy) and periwinkle. After that, she talked about the various certification criteria to be met and talked about the plans I had in mind. It was very meaningful and fun to talk with the technician, Rachael, about my future plans.

認定を受けるために色々な基準をクリアしないといけないので、今回のブログではその話と、これから作っていく3つの在来種エリアのうちの一つを紹介します。

In order to receive certification, my yard has to meet various criteria, so in this post, I will talk about that and introduce one of the three native plant areas that I will be creating.

レイチェルから頂いたパケットの中には在来種のリストやペストマネジメント、プログラムの概要、割引クーポンなどの情報が満載でした。この中で一番重要なのは認定基準表。これをクリアしないと認定されませんからねぇ。認定にはシルバー、ゴールド、プラチナの3段階があります。レイチェルによると、うちの庭は私が考えているプランで難なくシルバーはいけるということでした。

The packet I received from Rachael was filled with information such as native plant list, pest management, program overview, and discount coupons. Among them, the most important thing is the certification criteria. Unless I clear this, I will not be certified. There are three levels of certification: Silver, Gold, and Platinum. According to Rachael, my garden will be able to receive Silver Certificate easily with the plan I have in mind.

上記のシルバーの基準とレイチェルのレポートをみてみると、まずしないといけないのは「シルバーレベルの雑草を取り除く」こと（なんだかロールプレイングゲームみたい(@_@)）。うちで該当するのはブラックベリーとツタ。長女の助けを借りて引っこ抜きました。早速クリアー！

Looking at the above Silver criteria and Rachael’s report, the first thing I need to do is “remove the silver level weeds” (kinda like a role-playing game (@_@)). Among them, blackberries and ivy fall into this category. I pulled them out with the help of my eldest daughter. Immediately clear!

次の基準は、「敷地内の植物を植えることができる面積の5％以上を在来種エリアにする」こと。また、「高さの異なる3つのレイヤーを揃える」こと。これはちょっと説明する必要がありますね。在来種はうちのようにあちこちに点在していると野生の動物や昆虫にとってそれほど役に立たないらしいです。在来種が多く存在するエリア（50％以上在来種のエリア）を作り、自然界のようにする必要があります。また、その在来種は「ポートランド植物リスト」に載っているものである必要があります。高さの違うレイヤーを集めることで、違うレイヤーに生息する動物や昆虫をサポートすることができます。

The next criteria is that “at least 5% of the plant-able area on the premises should be designated as an area for native plants“. Also, “has three canopy layers“. This needs some explanation. It seems that native plants are not as useful to wild animals and insects when they are scattered here and there like in my garden. I need to create native plant areas by grouping plants (area with over 50% native plants) and mimic the natural world. Additionally, the plants must be listed on the “Portland Plant List“. By having 3 or more canopy layers, you can support different wild animals and insects that live on different layers.

その他の基準は、化学薬品を使わないことであったり、鳥のために水飲み場を作ったり窓にぶつからない工夫をしたりと、「野生の動物や昆虫をサポートするような工夫をすること」です。これはすでにいくつもしてあるのでクリア済みです。

Other criteria include not using chemicals, maintaining bird baths, reducing bird window collisions, that is “taking measures to support wild animals and insects.” I’ve already done many of this, so I’ve cleared it.

そういうわけで、自宅の庭の三箇所（裏庭に二箇所と表に一箇所）を在来種エリアにすることにしました。第一のエリアは裏庭の北西の角。すでに成熟した在来種のオレゴングレープとkinnikinnick（大部分がフェンスの外側）が植わっているエリアです。ここに下の写真のようにサラール3つと黄色のスミレ3つ、そしてシダを一つ加えました。シダをもう二つ加えたらこのエリアは完成です。

Therefore, I decided to designate three areas in my garden (two in the backyard and one in the front) as native plant areas. The first area is the northwest corner of the backyard. This area already has mature Tall Oregon grape and kinnikinnicks (mostly outside the fence). Here, like the picture below, I added 3 salals, 3 yellow violets, and a fern. Add two more ferns to complete this area.

さて、次のエリアは裏庭の北東の角。ここで問題発生！！！よく見ると、15年経ったイタリア松がフェンスを押しているではありませんか！！！フェンスが倒れるとやばいので、この松の木を切り倒してもらわないといけなくなりました😢 てな訳で、現在業者に見積もり請求中です。

Now, the next area is the northeast corner of the backyard. There’s a problem here! ! ! When I looked closely, I found the 15-years old Italian Pine pushing against the fence! ! ! It would be dangerous if the fence fell down, so this pine tree has to go😢 So, I’m currently requesting estimates from contractors.
