〜事後報告ですが。This happened a few months ago.〜

これでわたしもマスターリサイクラー🎶 Now, I am a Master Recycler, too🎶

プログラムの概要は以前書きましたが、興味のある方のためにもう一回書きますね♪ と言いつつ、ウェブサイトから引用。。。

I’ve written about the outline of the program before, but I’ll write about it again for those who are interested♪ Having said that, but I’ll quote from the website….

The Master Recycler Program is a community engagement volunteer corps focused on sustainable consumption, climate protection, environmental justice, saving food, toxics reduction, repair, reuse, composting, and recycling.

Each year, three 7-week trainings rotate through the three counties in the Portland metro region. Armed with outreach techniques and resources, graduates commit to 30 hours of community engagement. Master Recyclers volunteer at local events, with community partners, and through individual projects. They receive ongoing training, resources, and technical support to help them reach their goals.

The Master Recycler Program also partners with local community organizations to conduct the Community-Design program. This program provides resources, training, a workforce, and project development for community-driven initiatives. The program partners with communities of color, low income communities, people who are linguistically isolated, and multifamily communities. Specific communities come together as a group and design sustainability projects that meet their own goals and aspirations.

This program is brought to you by Metro, the City of Portland, Clackamas County, Washington County, and the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality.

30時間のクラスを取って30時間のボランティアをして「マスターリサイクラー」になります。クラスは毎週3時間で、3-4章づつ進むのでペースが早いのですが、ボランティアは自分のやりたいときにマイペースでできます。早い人は1ヶ月ほどで終わらせることができますが、中には何年もかけてこなす人もいます。わたしは4ヶ月ちょっとで終了。

You can become a “Master Recycler” by taking 30 hours of classes and volunteering for 30 hours. The classes are 3 hours a week, and you go through 3-4 chapters at a time, so the pace is fast, but you can volunteer at your own pace when you want to. Some people can finish in about a month, but some people take years to complete it. I finished mine in a little over 4 months.

わたしが行ったボランティア活動は以下の通り。

• ファーマーズマーケットでのワシントン郡のTabling（日本語訳がわからないけど、ブースでリサイクル情報の提供）
• ブログでこのプラグラムで習った情報の提供
• Waste Free Advocatesの年会の報告（ブログ）
• 日本語デイケアきのね園での勉強会
• 同デイケア主催のイベントでコンポストについてのワークショップ
• リサイクルやコンポストについての問い合わせへの返答
• 自分が主催したチャリティイベントで使うリユーザブルの皿とカップの調達
• リペアフェアへFixpertとして参加
• （予定）ジーンズお直しワークショップにアシスタントとして参加

The volunteer activities I did were as follows:

• Washington County Tabling at the Farmers Market
• Providing information learned in this program on my blog
• Reporting Waste Free Advocates Annual Meeting (blog)
• Study session at Kinone Space (Japanese Daycare)
• Workshop on composting at an event hosted by the same daycare
• Responding to inquiries about recycling and composting
• Procuring reusable plates and cups for a charity event I hosted
• Participating in a repair fair as a Fixpert
• (planned) Participating in a jeans repair
  workshop as an assistant

上記の引用やボランティア活動を見てもらうとわかると思いますが、リサイクル自体は活動のほんの一部に過ぎません。リサイクルできる資源は限られていることと（主に金属、ガラス、段ボール）、使い捨てパッケージの多くがリサイクルできないプラスチックに移行していることから、流れは「責任を持った消費の仕方」と「再利用」へと変化しています。

As you can see from the quotes and volunteering above, recycling is only a small part of my activities. With limited recyclable resources (mainly metal, glass and cardboard) and a shift in most single-use packaging to non-recyclable plastics, the trend is towards “responsible consumption” and “reuse“.

プラスチックをまるでリサイクルできないもののように書いていますが、できないと言っても過言ではありません。そもそも全体の9％しかリサイクル市場に向かわないだけでなく、されてもダウンサイクル（ボトルからビニール袋等）もしくは燃料として使われています。プラスチックはリサイクルされる過程でも環境汚染がひどく、正直埋め立てた方がいいのではないかと個人的に思っています。

I’ve written about plastic as if it can’t be recycled, but it’s no exaggeration to say that it can’t be recycled. In the first place, only 9% of plastic goes to the recycling market , and even if it does, it is downcycled (from bottles to plastic bags, etc.) or used as fuel. Plastic pollutes the environment so much
even during the recycling process that I personally think it would be better to just landfill it.

石油ガスとプラスチックは経済の発展に大いに貢献してきました。でも、もうそろそろ目を覚ました方がいいのでは？気候変動と環境汚染の7割は石油ガスプラスチックが原因だそうです。「科学がこの問題を解決する」なんて思っていても、自分自身がその方法を発明できる自信がないなら、幻想でしかないでしょう。マジックピルなんてないんですよ。全ての薬に副作用があるように、科学発明の全てにダウンサイドがある。自分の子孫により良い世界をと願ったら（多くの親がそう願うように）、どうしたらいいんでしょう？神頼みにせず、自ら行動するのがわたしの流儀。

Oil, gas and plastics have contributed greatly to economic development. But isn’t it time to wake up? They say that 70% of climate change and environmental pollution are caused by oil, gas and plastics. Even if you think “science will solve this problem,” it’s just an illusion if you don’t have the confidence to invent the method yourself. There is no magic pill. Just as all medicines have side effects, all scientific inventions have downsides. If we want a better world for our children (as many parents do), what should we do? My approach is to take action and not rely on God.

というわけで、わたしはなるべくプラスチックまたはプラスチックに入った商品を買わないようにしています。来月はプラスチックフリー月間。我が家もチャレンジします！

So, I try not to buy plastic or products that comes in plastic as much as possible. Next month is Plastic Free July. My family will also try it!
