Denim Curtain Repurposed! デニムカーテン、再利用！

みなさん、お久しぶりです。夏休みで旅行に行ったり、サーカスのクラスをとってみたり、サーカス観に行ったり、庭でブルーベリーの収穫したり、ワイナリー見学の仲介をしたりと忙しくて、ブログの更新は後回しになっていました💦 が、コロナにかかって5日間の自宅隔離中、4日目からエネルギーが出てきて、ついに溜まっていた裁縫プロジェクトを全て終わらせることができました🎉 プロジェクトのほとんどが衣服の修繕だったんですが、オリジナルよりかっこよく出来上がると、自分のセンスにうっとりしたりして😎

Everyone, it’s been a while. I was busy with summer vacation, traveling, taking a circus class, going to see a circus, picking blueberries in my garden, and arranging winery tours, so I had to put off updating my blog💦 But, after catching COVID-19 and spending five days in isolation, I started to feel energized from the fourth day and finally managed to finish all of my piling up sewing projects🎉 Most of the projects were repairing clothes, and when the finished product turned out better than the original, I was fascinated by my own sense of style😎

そのプロジェクトの一つが庭のクッションの修理。元々のカバーが破れてしまったので、新しくカバーを作ろうと思っていたのですが、具体案が決まらずに夏も終わりに近づいてしまいました。手持ちの生地を使うと4つ分のカバーを同じ生地で作ることができないのでどうしようかと思っていたところ、思い出したのが、処分しようと思っていた「色褪せたカーテン」。15年前に買ったポッタリーバーンのデニムカーテンで、素材と縫製がいいので何かに使えるかなと思って取ってありました（当時はデニムの手提げバッグを作ろうと思っていた）。以下、手順です。とても簡単なので、もしよかったら試してみてください。

One of the projects was repairing the outdoor cushions. The original covers were torn, so I wanted to make new covers, but I couldn’t come up with a concrete plan and the end of summer was approaching. I was wondering what to do since I couldn’t make four covers out of the same fabric if I would use my stock, and then I remembered some faded curtains that I was going to get rid of. They were Pottery Barn’s denim curtains from 15 years ago and I had kept them because the material and stitching were sturdy and I thought I could use them for something (at that time I was thinking of making denim tote bags. Hoarder!). Below are the steps. It’s very easy, so please give it a try if you like.

プランは、マチのついた袋を作りクッションに被せる。元々ある縫い代はそのまま使う（このクッションの場合はカーテン幅の半分がちょうどクッションの奥行きと同じだった）。
- 裏地をハサミで切り取る。
- デニム地を切り分ける。このクッションは最も幅広な部分が周囲120cm。その半分の60cmに縫い代が両側合わせて3.5cmとゆとり幅の半分の4.5cmを足して68cm。カーテンを68cmの高さにカットする。一枚のカーテンから2枚分取れた。
- 縫い代を袋縫い。デニムはほつれやすいので縫い代の始末をしないといけない。ロックする分の糸がなかったので、今回は袋縫いで始末。まず、表を外に合わせ、5ミリのところを縫う。その後ひっくり返して中表にし、10ミリのところを縫う。
- マチを縫う。

というわけで、クッションの延命に成功👌

The plan is to make a gusseted bag and place the cushion in it. I used the existing seam (in this case, half the width of the curtain was exactly the same as the depth of the cushion).
- Cut out the lining with scissors.
- Cut the denim fabric. The widest part of this cushion is 120cm in circumference. Add half of that (60cm) plus 3.5cm for the seam on both sides and half of the allowance (4.5cm) to get a total of 68cm. Cut the curtain to a height of 68cm. Two pieces were obtained from one curtain.
- French seam. Denim frays easily, so the seam needs to be finished. I didn’t have enough thread to use for lock stitching, so I finished it with French seam this time. First, put the wrong side together and sew at 5 mm. Then bag out and sew at 10 mm.
- Sew the gusset.

So, I succeeded in extending the life of the cushion👌
